Commercial Waste Diversion Specialist

The Commercial Waste Diversion Specialist works to support waste diversion practices in the commercial sector of Strathcona County. This position is responsible for planning, implementing and coordinating comprehensive waste management programs and policies that are designed to maximize waste prevention and diversion opportunities in the business sector within Strathcona County.
This position will provide leadership, guidance and project management expertise to assist businesses, institutions and multi-family buildings with their waste management services that will contribute to the community-wide commitment of diverting waste from landfills.
**Responsibilities**:
- Develop and implement waste diversion policies and programs for the commercial sector in order to further strategic waste diversion objectives
- Conduct site assessments and support the development of individualized plans for enhancing waste diversion in commercial and institutional buildings
- Liaise with staff and contractors to ensure deliverables of programs are met
- Develop resources to support, implement and monitor effective collection strategies in public facing facilities
- Evaluate programs, collect data and provide annual reporting on County waste management
- Oversee the coordination and implementation of multi-family residential waste diversion and collection programs
- Work with condo associations, property management companies, residents and private waste haulers to develop waste diversion solutions for the multi-residential sector
- Develop educational materials for tenants of multi-residential complexes and buildings
- Work with regional organizations, municipalities and industry associations in a collaborative effort to advance consistent commercial waste solutions across the region and province
- Speak and present to individuals and groups of various backgrounds on the County’s waste diversion programs and policies
**Qualifications and Skills**
- Minimum of three (3) years' experience in a leadership capacity within a related work area (waste management, environmental management, business/economic development, marketing) with a related post secondary diploma
- In depth knowledge of collection, processing and disposal of waste streams is an asset
- Firm understanding of municipal and commercial solid waste management, including knowledge of municipal, provincial and federal policies and legislation
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate, both written and verbal, with stakeholder groups, business community, municipal colleagues and residents
- Able to work independently or as part of a team with the ability to shift priorities on short notice and adapt to changing work schedules and environments
- Excellent customer service and public relation skills
- Creative talent for program development and developing educational material
**Conditions of Employment**
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
