Small Animal Control Specialist

This posting is for one temporary full time position up to one year.

The Small Animal Control Specialist assists in the coordination, planning and delivery of Strathcona County’s Human Wildlife Coexistance program to the general public, including private and public land, industry, and commercial operations. The position focuses on mitigating human wildlife conflict throughout Strathcona County.

**Responsibilities**:

- Assist and advise on control of small mammals on private and public land
- Assist with the control and monitoring of wildlife within the parameters of the Human Wildlife Coexistance program
- Respond to and provide assistance regarding wildlife and invasive pest species as outlined in the Agricultural Pests Act, the Wildlife Act, and Strathcona County’s policies and procedures
- Provide accurate, technical information related to Agriculture and Environment programs, projects and initiatives to residents, internal departments, and external stakeholders.
- Conduct field assessments in support of drainage issues, Work with various departments and stakeholders to implement solutions

**Qualifications & Skills**
- Post-secondary education in an Agricultural or Environmental field with courses in wildlife biology; two years related experience is preferred
- Knowledge of small mammal biology and control techniques
- Knowledge and familiarity with the Agricultural Pests Act, and Strathcona County’s policies and procedures
- Effective customer service, public relations and communication skills (verbal and written) to work with diverse groups of individuals and the ability to deal with residents in challenging situations
- General computer proficiency and the ability to learn department specific software; experience in GIS is an asset
- The ability to work self-sufficiently in field conditions that include inclement weather and remote rural areas
- Current Standard First Aid is an asset
- A Possession and Acquisition License (PAL)

**Conditions of Employment**
- Submission of Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
- Successful passing of a Pre-Employment Drug and Alcohol Test
- Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time
