**About the Role**:
The Communications Officer plays a key role in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of all communication activities related to the Ottawa People’s Commission (OPC). The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the OPC has an appropriate and achievable communications plan and resources and activities to support it. The Communications Officer is responsible for the key areas of communications such as printed materials, social media and managing the website as well as playing a key role in media relations.
The Communications Officer also plays a public relations role to promote community awareness and the visibility of the OPC.

**Requirements**:
A Bachelor’s degree in Communications or a related discipline from a recognized University, with a focus on communications, public relations, and professional writing.
Minimum two years’ experience in a similar position with a focus on communications, public relations, professional writing, or equivalent work-related duties.
Strong research and writing skills in English, along with ability to produce such products as news releases, feature stories, annual reports, briefing notes, presentation decks and content appropriate for electronic environments
Proven ability to create a variety of communications products that strategically match the different information needs of both internal and external stakeholder audiences
Ability to develop creative ways to achieve communication goals with limited budgets
Thorough knowledge of social media trends and best practices and proven experience with managing social media accounts as well as monitoring and reporting on social media ie. TweetDeck, Twitter, Facebook
Strong and savvy media skills with solid news judgment and knowledge of how to present and package information to maximize media interest on the various social media platforms.
-Knowledge of graphic design fundamentals and how to produce communications products suitable for both print and electronic environments for diverse audiences
Commitment to and knowledge of community-based health and social services responding to diverse populations
Demonstrated respect and value for the diversity of the community and individuals
Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision and collaborate effectively in an inter-professional team environment
Strong organizational, problem solving and interpersonal skills Strong problem identification and resolution skills
Sound judgement and conflict resolution skills
Demonstrated flexibility and effectiveness within a rapidly changing environment, short deadlines and multiple priorities
Ability to see the big picture and excellent attention to detail
Demonstrated proficiency with and knowledge of Windows-based computer systems including Microsoft Office
Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

**Desirable**-Knowledge of marketing and communications principles, guidelines and best working practices
Fund development experience in the non-profit sector
French - written and spoken
