As a vital part of the Forestry and Wildlife branch, the Resource Management Division is the primary strategic lead for cross-departmental work to ensure the sustainable conservations, management and use of the province’s renewable resources, Crown Lands and forests. Ensures that planning, decision making and management action involving the provinces renewable resources are based on the best scientific and traditional knowledge available and ensures that all uses are sustainable.

**About Our Opportunity**:
The Forestry and Wildlife Branch provides direction on policy, planning and program development in the areas of industry development and resource promotion, resource inventories and research, and the preparation of strategies and plans for the integrated development, management and conservation of the province's forests, parks and wildlife resources.
- As part of the Resource Management Division you would be responsible for:
- Coordinating with staff, forest industry, other government agencies and non-government organizations on resource management targets and objectives to help ensure sustainability.
- Development, support and implementation of policy, procedures, work standards and programs for Crown lands resource management.
- Negotiating, amending, and monitoring agreements for the management of natural resource with industry and other resource user groups for the management of natural resource on Crown lands.
- Reviewing forest management plans, recommending budgets and monitoring progress of field implementation.
- Ensuring that forest harvest and improvement work are completed to provincial technical standards and meet departmental policies and objectives for resource sustainability.
- Budget authority for program funding proposals, allocations, forecasts and expenditure approvals
- Working to remove or reduce barriers to optimization of wood fibre flow while meeting new forestry directions and ecological forestry objectives.

The Resource Forester reports to the Manager, Crown Resource Development.**About You**:

- A University degree in Forestry and 6 or more years related experience. An acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
- Requirements for this position:
- comprehensive knowledge of resource management principles, practices, objectives, policies, and procedures as well as federal and provincial regulations concerning natural resources
- a strong background and knowledge of Nova Scotia’s Forest Industry
- experience and knowledge in managing provincial level programs particularly resource management programs
- knowledge regarding national, provincial, and regional forestry issues and topics as well as forestry and wildlife policies, regulations, and guidelines
- Team building, effective written and oral communication, organizational skills, innovative thinking, well developed interpersonal skills, and diplomacy
- Strong leadership and project management skills are essential in the position to build and maintain respectful relationships, negotiate and facilitate clear direction, enable and inspire peers, and ensure exceptional collaboration and engagement
- Understanding of forest modeling processes and principles
- Understanding and experience in data management and budgeting
- Ability to work under mínimal supervision

Other assets would include:
- Knowledge and understanding of forest ecosystem management in Nova Scotia
- A working knowledge of the Nova Scotia crown harvest approval process
- Good understanding of Nova Scotia wood flows, mill, and trucking requirement
- A working knowledge of ArcGIS
