Position Overview:
Reporting to the Corporate Sustainability Officer in the Sustainability Office, Office of the GM, Development Services, this position advances the development of strategy, enables shared measurement, policy, mobilizes resources and builds capacity and engagement across our organization and community.
- This position is responsible for supporting the advancement of corporate and community sustainability planning with a significant focus on climate change action (both mitigation and adaptation). The position considers and integrates the following dimensions in its work within both the corporation and community:
- Technical (facilities, equipment, and operations)
- Organizational (corporate policy, processes, and culture)
- Behavioural (user groups of facilities and equipment, staff and citizens)
This role advances inter-departmental planning and the integration of these dimensions across the organization into corporate and community policy, practice, programs, strategy, and reporting progress in order to make transformational impact on goals such as becoming a net-zero organization and playing an active role in a corporate and community energy transition.***
- Responsibilities:
- Guide Vision, Strategy and Reporting- Lead data collection, research, and analysis, compiling information, monitoring, and verification to advance data as an asset in strategy development, reporting progress and storytelling.
- Lead and coordinate measurement, monitoring and reporting into several frameworks including FCM PCP, SWR impact report, WCCD/ISO37120, CDP, Corporate Climate Action Plan 2.0, ClimateActionWR -TransformWR and City of Kitchener Strategic Plan.
- Manage corporate GHG inventory and database
- Research best practice, support the development and implementation of policy, programs, projects, budgets and workplans on the energy transition and decarbonization strategies as well as sustainability more broadly.
- Project manage the development, implementation, monitoring and improvement of policy, databases, programs and strategy.
- Author and contribute to Council reports, briefing notes and public communication (written, verbal, on line and in person).
- Build Engagement, Capacity and Mobilize Resources- Lead planning and delivery of corporate and community outreach and engagement activities (e.g., Earth Hour/Day and consultations with staff, the public, academia and other strategic partners).
- Build literacy around climate change and related topics (e.g., develop literacy modules about climate change, make presentations, prepare other materials).
- Build, maintain and leverage the support of networks (e.g., utility providers, ClimateActionWR, Reep Green Solutions, WRCommunity Energy, Sustainable Waterloo Region, post-secondary institutions).
- Offer expertise and capacity across the organization (including to staff and divisional senior management) and community to support climate action (e.g., project delivery).
- Act as staff liaise or Kitchener representative to committees and teams (e.g. Council Advisory Committee on Climate Change and the Environment, Fleet User Working Group and other committees/teams).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
**Requirements**:
- 4 years Honours Degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Climate Change, or related discipline.
- 2-4 years of related experience (in the municipal sector would be considered an asset).
- General knowledge of municipal programs and core service delivery with a solid understanding of municipal scope of influence on climate action related to energy and emissions, direct and indirect control, corporate and community responsibility.
- Ability to build and sustain relationships over time within the organization, and across sectors and with strategic partners in the community in order to build trust, collaborate and make progress on the work.
- Project management skills to manage multi-stakeholder projects.
- Ability to write project plans, including project schedules, scope, timelines, budget, reports, correspondence, RFP and project documentation and filing.
