Position Summary
The Medical Director, MHSU Network will be the psychiatrist with primary responsibility for medical and clinical services in Mental Health and Substance Use services for the Agency working in partnership with the Executive Director for MHSU Network in a co-leadership model.
The MHSU leadership team in which the Medical Director participates will be responsible for the delivery of quality psychiatric and MHSU services across the continuum of care, to ensure that MHSU services are of the highest quality, and that services are aligned with national, provincial, and health authority wide standards and initiatives.
Reporting Relationships
The MHSU Leadership Team (Executive Director and Medical Director) will report to the VP, Clinical Operations, IH North. The Medical Director will be appointed by the VP, Clinical Operations, IH North for a three-year term, renewable.
Key Responsibilities
The Physician shall provide administrative services to the Agency as the Medical Director, Mental Health and Substance Use Network. The roles and responsibilities for this assignment are as follows:
1. Reports to the VP, Clinical Operations, IH North, on all operational matters.
2. Reports to the VP, Medicine and Quality for all physician professional practice and medical-staff-specific quality issues.
3. Works collaboratively with the VP, Medicine and Quality and VP, Clinical Operations, IH North to create a multidisciplinary team to address all quality and safety issues.
4. Jointly with the Executive Director, MHSU Network leads and facilitates a collaborative inter-professional environment to enhance a patient-focused approach to the provision of MHSU Services including but not limited to services within acute, residential, tertiary and community MHSU sites.
5. Actively contributes and participates in IHA-wide leadership for MHSU services in all aspects of quality, patient safety, planning, operations, utilization management and evaluations of medical and physician services. This is inclusive of all services across the spectrum of care from prevention through to tertiary services and including but not limited to the following patient populations across all regions of IHA: children and youth, seniors, Aboriginal clients, the LGBTQ2S community and those with substance use concerns.
6. Aligned with the IHA vision, mission, values, strategic goals and priorities, provides consistent physician leadership for all physicians in the MHSU Services Program within the Agency.
LEADERSHIP
1. Actively participates and engages with members of the Leadership Team and provides medical input into the day-to-day management of the MHSU Network.
2. Co-leads, the program with the Executive Director, the setting of standards/guidelines for health services for the assigned Program; develops systems for monitoring performance to these standards; develops and actions mitigation and improvement plans in the areas of non-performance.
3. Leads and works collaboratively with the Executive Director and the VP, Medicine and Quality and VP, Clinical Operations, IH North in the investigation of Patient Safety Learning System (PSLS) occurrences and patient complaints in order to ensure quality patient care is maintained.
4. Represents the Agency where appropriate, in matters related to medico-legal issues, relationships with other agencies, professional licensing bodies and regulatory bodies relevant to MHSU services.
5. Provides leadership and support for programs and initiatives within the MHSU Network in order to provide high-quality, safe patient care and optimum clinical resource utilization.
6. Participates in planning activities related to the MHSU Network within the larger context of the Agency.
7. Takes action to ensure maintenance of competence, professional standards of care and ethical conduct of physicians.
