**About Us**:
The Natural Gas Strategy and Engagement Branch is the lead group supporting the mandate to restore the health of Alberta’s natural gas sector so Albertans can benefit from a robust, competitive and sustainable natural gas industry. The branch also ensures appropriate integration and alignment of strategic policies involving natural gas and key development pathways (like hydrogen, petrochemicals, liquefied natural gas, and plastic circular economy) across the Government of Alberta.

The Natural Gas Strategy and Engagement Branch is looking for one Policy Analyst to fill each of the following units:

- The Competitiveness and Environment Unit leads the development and implementation of the government’s roadmap to divert plastics as a new value stream for the petrochemical sector and decarbonize the plastics value chain. Advancing and advocating for a plastics circular economy is a critical component of the unit’s work.
- The Investment Attraction Unit leads investment attraction for all natural gas value chains, including hydrogen, LNG, petrochemicals and plastics circular economy. The unit also supports international exports for natural gas commodities, including LNG, fuel ammonia, methanol, and works closely with federal/provincial/territorial governments, Alberta International Offices, Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, and industry stakeholders.
- The Strategy and Stakeholder Relations Unit leads the development and implementation of policies and strategies to advance Alberta’s hydrogen economy and opportunities for Alberta’s gas to support Canadian LNG projects.

**Role**:
The Policy Analysts operate in a dynamic and complex environment involving multiple ministries, governments, and industry stakeholders. These positions demand a high attention to detail, strong organizational and planning skills, and an ability to prioritize and deliver on multiple ongoing projects.

The Policy Analysts will:

- Conduct research on various topics and develop briefing materials, options, recommendations, and the overall impact of recommendations for the Premier, Minister, Executive Council, and other senior officials.
- Initiate, plan, organize and implement projects based on high-level direction, intended outcomes, and resourcing as well as advise on timelines and milestones to implement any changes within desired timeframes.
- Support large, high-profile projects, as strategic initiatives are often at the forefront of Deputy Minister, Minister, and Executive Council priorities.
- Operate in an environment of ambiguity where it is necessary to coordinate strategic initiatives and issues management without prior knowledge or exposure to the policy area or when roles, responsibilities, and deliverables are fluid and left to project teams to determine.
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders and staff at all levels, and ensure input is presented within strategy, planning and policy documents in a coordinated and comprehensive manner.
- Analyze and review information to ensure division/ministry perspectives are reflected.
- Use creativity and judgment to develop and present policy options and planning information in a manner appropriate for a variety of audiences.
- Deliver high quality work in very short timeframes. Quality and accuracy is critical, given plans and reports are presented to the Premier’s Office, Executive Council, external stakeholders and the public.
- Demonstrate agility to shift focus on a daily - or even hourly - basis, due to the issues management nature of the work.
- Demonstrate discretion and political acumen as issues are often diverse, complex, and politically sensitive.

**Qualifications**:
University graduation in a related field plus 2 years of progressively responsible related experience in policy development processes, including policy analysis and stakeholder consultation.

**Equivalency**: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

**Assets**:

- Experience with issues impacting the energy sector, particularly the natural gas sector, emerging commodities such as hydrogen, and petrochemical industry.
- Experience with quantitative and qualitative analysis tools.
- Strong communication skills with experience working with stakeholders.
- Knowledge in economics, international finance and investment attraction.
- Experience with legislation and regulatory development processes.
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.
