You'll work closely with residents, community groups, businesses, and other partners to find solutions to safety concerns and improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods. As a Community Safety Liaison you will be required to use creative problem solving skills and have a willingness to explore the connection between the built environment, social context and economic factors that impact Edmontonians safety. You'll be the bridge between residents, community groups, local stakeholders and service providers, other City departments as well as our enforcement partners such as the Edmonton Police Service and Community Peace Officers. Your focus will be on understanding and addressing the factors that contribute to safety issues, promoting crime and violence prevention, and fostering a sense of security and well-being for all Edmontonians. This is a challenging but rewarding position that requires strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative approach, and a deep understanding of community dynamics.
**What Will You Do?**
- Lead and participate in community safety initiatives and projects
- Use available data and indicators as well as the lived experiences of Edmontonians to inform projects
- Build and maintain strong relationships with community groups, businesses, residents, and other key partners
- Employ project management frameworks to plan and oversee initiatives
- Develop and implement community-driven solutions to safety issues
- Advise and mentor community groups on safety and crime prevention strategies, including environmental design principles that emphasize social interaction and animation for safe communities
- Collaborate with Edmonton Police Service and other agencies to address safety concerns
- Foster partnerships to integrate community resources and enhance service availability for vulnerable populations
- Implement community safety initiatives using a GBA+ approach that is citizen-driven
- Seek to identify, hear and respond to the concerns of equity deserving communities
- Facilitate meetings, workshops, and events related to community safety
- Conduct active outreach to ensure stakeholder participation in consultations, training, meetings, events, and services
- Bring diverse groups together to identify and achieve common objectives
- Prepare reports, presentations, and other communication materials
- Stay up-to-date on trends and best practices impacting community safety, vibrancy and wellness
**Qualifications**:
- A Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Social Sciences, Human Ecology, or a related field.
- Registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers (if qualified as a Social Worker)
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in community development, including needs assessments, community engagement, strategy development and implementation, and working with a broad range of stakeholders
**Assets**:
- A Master's degree in a related field
- Understanding of social policies and government initiatives related to crime and violence prevention
- Project Management skills and/or certification

- Demonstrated skills in facilitating community development, building partnerships, and fostering relationships
- Knowledge of community safety issues, crime prevention strategies, and social justice principles
- Knowledge of community development, safety strategies, and interpersonal dynamics
- Superior knowledge of community resources and agencies
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills
- Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills
- Effective communication and presentation skills
- Excellent project management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent leadership skills, including decision-making, and problem solving
- Demonstrated superior organizational and management skills in leading projects
- Understanding of equity-deserving communities, their history, culture and current environment.
Knowledge of anti-racism, social justice and other geopolitical issues affecting diverse communities, including Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Calls for Justice
**Conditions of Employment**:
