Job Summary
The Research Technician 2 will perform a variety of independent activities involved in planning, coordinating and conducting research studies in the area of psychosis and schizophrenia.

Organizational Status

This position is based out of University of British Columbia, Department of Psychiatry, in Vancouver and works as part of Dr. Todd Woodward and Dr. Mahesh Menon’s research team. The position reports to and is supervised by the Dr. Todd Woodward and Dr. Mahesh Menon. The position works with graduate students and is responsible for data collection.

The research projects involve the collection and analysis of data, including functional brain imaging results, cognitive psychology and symptom ratings on patient and healthy populations to better understand the symptoms of psychosis.

The data collection will take place in the Brain Dynamics laboratory at the University of British Columbia, Department of Psychiatry, as well as the High Field Imaging Laboratory at UBC, and various community mental health agencies.

Work Performed- Recruit, screen, schedule and test research participants with and without mental illnesses.- Schedule research appointments with participants, research staff and MRI technologists.- Maintain lab petty cash accounts.- Liaise with mental health groups and practitioners at various hospitals and community organizations to recruit study participants.- Give presentations to mental health groups about lab research projects for recruitment purposes.-
- Create and enter the collected data into data sheets in Excel and SPSS.- Conduct psychiatric interviews with patients including the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and the Signs and Symptoms of Psychotic Illness (SSPI).- Administer cognitive task testing with patients including the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task (WCST) and Bias Against Disconfirmatory Evidence (BADE).- Administer intelligence tests with patients including the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (KBIT-2) and the National Adult Reading Test (NART).- Administer cognitive tasks using the fMRI with participants with and without psychosis through fMRI Tasks at UBC Hospital.- Conduct research sessions with mentally ill individuals and healthy volunteers from the community to investigate cognitive processes involved in psychosis.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

When working with individuals with affected by mental illness, it is always essential that one exercises good decision making to ensure the safety and security of both the employee and the affected individual. This position requires the ability to make sound decisions regarding situations that may place the employee or their participant in an emotionally, psychologically or physically compromising position.

This position requires the ability to determine eligibility for studies, some of which require MRI scanning. It is essential that both psychiatric and non-psychiatric participants are screened according to ethical standards and given adequate information so they can make an informed decision about their participation in research. It is also essential to adequately screen potential participants to ensure safe entry into the magnetic field.

High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
