Job Summary
This position's primary purpose in the lab will be to provide support for molecular biology projects related to the genetic, biochemical, and neuropathological characterization of Huntington disease. The position will be further involved in the use cell and mouse models for preclinical testing of novel therapeutics for Huntington disease.
Organizational Status
This position will play a role in the Hayden Lab and report directly to the research fellow who leads the project, working closely with postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and other technicians in the lab. Ultimately the position will report to the primary investigator of the laboratory.
Work Performed
Perform molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, cloning, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, and qPCR.
Perform cell culture experiments using cell lines, iPSCs, and primary neuronal cultures.
Process biological tissue for downstream molecular biology and histological analysis.
Perform immunohistochemical stains of tissue sections for downstream imaging and analysis.
Use fully automated high-end bright field and fluorescence microscopes, including complex associated software.
Work with trainees and staff to develop and troubleshoot new techniques.
Design and write standard operating procedures for developed methodology.
Analyze results and provide recommendations to supervisor regarding solutions to problems or issues.
Perform other related duties as needed or requested.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent will make important decisions affecting the functioning of the lab, the reputation and standing of the research team, and the quality of data in resulting publications. Incompetence or incorrect decisions could jeopardize research progress, collaborations, finances and employee safety, and adversely impact future project objectives and personnel.
Supervision Received
This position will report to the supervising research fellow in the lab, and reports to the primary investigator at monthly lab meetings.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with DNA sequencing and fragment analysis is a plus
Experience with cell culture, especially neuronal cell culture, is a plus
Experience with rodent handling and microdissections is a plus
Knowledge of neuroanatomy and neuropathology is a plus
2 years full-time laboratory experience is preferred
Extensive knowledge of molecular biology and related techniques
Demonstrated laboratory experience with PCR and cloning is required
Accuracy, attention to detail, and clean laboratory practice are required
Competency in data analysis and an understanding of basic statistics is required
Knowledge of general laboratory safety and conduct
Proven ability to multi-task in a deadline-oriented environment with mínimal supervision
Effective oral and written communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
