JOB PURPOSE

Unilever is looking for a highly experienced pensions technical specialist (“Specialist”) to join its team looking after the varied and complex UK and Irish pensions arrangement.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Unilever’s UK & Ireland pensions team is responsible for:
- A large hybrid UK registered pension scheme with around 72,000 members and defined benefit assets of approximately £10.5bn and a growing DC section.- A one of a kind defined benefit section 615 scheme (for overseas service) with assets of around £155 million and around 715 members.- A closed defined benefit (final salary) Irish arrangement- A number of UK and Irish company unfunded arrangements

The Specialist will be part of the Pensions Technical and Trustee Services team which is the hub of the pensions team; providing specialist services in the areas of governance, technical review of communications, compliance with legislation and regulation, funding and policy. It provides technical pensions expertise to the various trustee clients, Company, outsourced Third Party Administrators and the in-house Expert Administration Team.

The Specialist will be involved one way or another in almost all work in UUKP; whether it’s helping administrators deal with a tricky member case, making recommendations to Trustees or senior company managers about policy changes or new legislation, providing technical expertise on many and varied projects, working with the Member Engagement team to ensure all employee and member communications are accurate or making sure all team members and relevant stakeholders are aware of and comply with new and existing legal or regulatory duties.

Some of the key matters the specialist will be responsible for are:
- Manage, or provide in depth technical expertise to, projects in the areas of governance, policy and benefit administration. Own and manage associated budgets and reporting in relation to budgets.- Research and find solutions to technical and legal queries; produce clear instructions/guidance/proposals in response.- Monitor and research changes in legislation, regulation and policy. Make recommendations and develop and provide instructions for implementing changes.- Research and understand the impact of industry consultations and prepare appropriate responses.- Complete or review surveys/statutory requests for information.- Technical review of the Deeds and formal documents (including Deeds of Amendment).- Review legal contracts.- Occasionally provide training to the Trustee Boards and to administrators.- Help administration deal with the more complex member administration cases, issues relating to lifetime allowance and annual allowance, and member complaints.- Draft or provide technical sign off of bulk member communications (including website content), Q&As, HR/Reward communications, employee contracts, presentations for employees, ad hoc targeted communications.- Work with Scheme Actuary to carry out regular reviews of actuarial factors.- From time to time as required, provide assistance to secretaries of the Trustee Boards in all areas of trustee governance; including preparation of papers for Trustee meetings and presenting some papers at Trustee meetings.

Able to identify and draw out the key important messages.- Enjoy juggling a variety of priorities and working under pressure to tight timescales; being highly organised and an effective planner in order to meet a variety of deadlines.- Be flexible.- Be able to work independently, with limited supervision whilst recognising important stakeholders and ensuring relevant approvals sought and/or key stakeholders are kept informed.- Be able to manage, and enjoy managing, projects involving multiple stakeholders, holding others (including suppliers, subordinates and those more senior in role) to account and being able to deliver on time to budget.- Thrive in a team; enjoying helping others achieve their work priorities.
