The School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is seeking a Research Associate (RA) for a 3-year term, with an initial appointment of one year renewable. The Research Associate will take the lead responsibility in developing a program of research focused on cancer screening, to better understand specific barriers and underlying health inequities in access to, and participation in, cancer screening programs. The position will also take a leadership role in developing and managing primary cancer prevention research projects in the cancer prevention group, including leading data analysis.

The Research Associate will work under the supervision of Dr. Trevor Dummer, Canadian Cancer Society Chair in Cancer Primary Prevention.

Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, SPPH is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.

The primary activities of the Research Associate include:- Provide leadership regarding the data acquisition and data analysis research components of cancer prevention projects within the research group- Act as a leader in trainee and mentorship activities within the research group that includes a research coordinator and MSc/Ph.D. students- Act as a mentor to the MSc/Ph.D. students- Act as a resource to the research group to identify real or potential problems and work to resolve these issues- Participate in study progress meetings with the research group- Conduct data analyses on study databases and generate reports- Develop abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations for submission and/or presentation as needed- Other duties as needed

Errors made could influence the ability of the research team to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of the research project, and therefore impact the credibility of the Principal Investigator. Poor decisions may be damaging to the reputation of the Principal Investigator, the School, and the University and could lead to incorrect or inappropriate policy recommendations being made.

This position will be responsible for access, collection, use and disclosure of personal health information in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996) and other UBC privacy and security policies. This position requires employees to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer.

The Research Associate will receive supervision from Dr. Trevor Dummer

Supervision Given:
The Research Associate will act as a mentor to graduate students in the research group and may be required to supervise the work of research assistants assigned to their research projects

Education/Work Experience:
_epidemiology and/or biostatistics_) and have completed a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship program of at least 2 years. A minimum of two years experience in a research environment following postdoctoral study is required.
- Experience:_- Demonstrated abilities and experience in the area of primary and secondary cancer prevention, research coordination and analysis of quantitative data- Experience in dealing with multiple commitments, short deadlines and sensitive health data and research issues- Familiarity working in a collaborative environment with multiple project partners- Familiarity and experience with grant-funded research projects and study protocol requirements, including ethical conduct, ethics approval process, standard operating procedures- Skills:_- Excellent communication skills, including strong writing, research and interpersonal skills.- Innovative and creative thinking and a logical approach to problem-solving are also necessary- Self-directed, self-motivated and independent work skills are essential- Preference will be given to applicants with advanced computer skills in SAS
