Job Summary

The role is accountable for managing the delivery of effective communications advisory services that strengthen NAV CANADA reputation as a global leader in ANS. Main responsibilities involve managing, and leading the conception, development, and execution of a variety of communications projects, negotiating contractual agreements and managing financial resources allocated to the unit. The special focus of the Media Relations team is the maintenance of open, positive ongoing relations with local, regional, national, and international media. The management of relationships with reporters and editors - and the constant education of these important stakeholders on NAV CANADA - is particularly crucial, along with the preparation of a wide variety of advocacy materials, their timely and effective distribution, and the accurate, effective provision of commentary on NAV CANADA issues, events, and developments. The incumbent is an effective external spokesperson for the Company - one of the primary external spokespersons (along with the Government and Media Relations Manager and other designated spokespersons from senior management).

In this role you will:

- Accountable for the overall delivery of an effective communications advisory service focused on positive relationships with local, national, and international media, key media contacts, with particular attention to media awareness and understanding of NAV CANADA and its programs and policies.
- Developing and coordinating proactive, positive media coverage strategies and strategic advice on media relations positioning in line with corporate objectives.
- Reviews and write news releases, backgrounders, speeches etc. and ensures compliance to
- corporate disclosure rules in all cases.
- Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of the organization and its issues, and writes and maintain up-to-date media lines to that effect.
- Responsible for 24/7 media response, responding to negative events while taking advantage of opportunities for positive media coverage as they arise.
- Acting as a spokesperson for NAV CANADA, facilitates and / or conducts telephone, face-to-face, or electronic (TV / Radio / Web) media encounters in an efficient and effective fashion to deliver accurate corporate position statements in an engaging fashion.
- Manages the provision of media relations support services including delivery of daily media scan, news wire distribution of news releases, ongoing subscriptions, updating the Media Room of NAV CANADA web site, and monitoring trends in media relations for incorporation into the NAV CANADA Media Relations mix.
- Conduct and plan regular, and ad-hoc media training for NAV CANADA spokespeople.
- Support the broader activities of the Stakeholder and Industry Relations team, as needed.
- Manages financial resources allocated for regular activities and special projects, reviews contract proposals, selects vendors and approves products and services delivered

What you bring:

- Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, or related field
- 5 years’ experience in Media Relations and in communications writing
- Experience with issue management, and crisis communication an asset
- Knowledge of the media structure and operations
- Knowledge of media expectations of communication professionals
- Knowledge and understanding of media trends and what make “news” and why
- Knowledge of the business of NAV CANADA, media relations policies and media relations operating procedures, corporate disclosure policy and code of business conduct an asset
- Knowledge and understanding of NAV CANADA vision, mission, goals, values, and mandate an asset
- Knowledge of the principles and practices relevant to the organization of work, the management of financial resources and contract agreements.
