Overview:
The Academic Advisor & Student Experience Specialist role within Statistics and Actuarial Science is responsible for student advising, undergraduate student outreach and event management, and improving the department's overall collaboration, integration, and communication.

The primary purpose of the role is to provide undergraduate student advising support. This role is expected to provide comprehensive academic guidance to students, specializing in first-year student support while demonstrating expertise in navigating university regulations, monitoring academic progress, and offering crisis intervention when necessary. In addition, they must also maintain thorough records, facilitate academic requests, and commit to continuous professional growth.

The Academic Advisor & Student Experience Specialist will manage all aspects of the undergraduate students' experience in the Department of Statistics & Actuarial Science. This includes but not limited to: providing strategic decision support to departmental leaders, leading program development and promotion, managing student volunteers, cultivating relationships with students and student clubs, and overseeing various undergraduate recognition, communication aspects, undergraduate student outreach, and undergraduate event management support for the department. The advisor also ensures the alignment of departmental initiatives with equity and inclusion principles.

The Academic Advisor & Student Experience Specialist will also help to facilitate engagement and networking among faculty members, offer guidance to colleagues, and stay informed about communication trends. Building relationships with university stakeholders, ensuring effective promotion, and managing various communication channels are integral to this role.

In addition, the incumbent is responsible for conducting research, generating reports, assessing student engagement, participating in committees, developing metrics, and providing operational leadership for advising projects, ensuring the effective implementation and communication of project outcomes. This multifaceted role is vital in fostering student success and engagement within the SAS department.

**Responsibilities**:
Student Advising
- Comprehensive Academic Guidance: Provide in-depth and comprehensive academic advising to students, offering expert insights on course and program selection, degree requirements, preregistration, and various academic concerns. Specialize in guiding first-year students within the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science (SAS) to ensure a strong academic foundation
- Academic Progress Monitoring: Proactively monitor the academic progress of specific student groups, employing a keen eye to identify individuals facing academic challenges Provide timely and proactive outreach, delivering personalized academic counselling to guide them toward success
- Progression Tracking: Take charge of reporting and meticulously tracking the academic progression of one or more student cohorts, diligently identifying trends and pinpointing areas necessitating improvement. Contribute data-driven insights for enhancing academic outcomes
- Collaborative Advising: Collaborate seamlessly with departmental advisors, fostering a cohesive approach to support academic progression and advisement for designated student cohorts. Ensure a unified and effective student advising ecosystem
- Prospective Student Guidance: Offer expert guidance and promptly respond to inquiries from prospective students keen on enrolling in SAS programs/majors under your purview Be a knowledgeable resource for students making critical academic decisions
- Crisis Intervention: Extend immediate and empathetic support to students facing distressing situations, taking swift action to ensure their well-being. Facilitate necessary referrals to relevant support services when required
- Thorough Record-Keeping: Maintain meticulous and up-to-date records, summarizing advice provided to individual students. This practice ensures consistency and continuity in support, facilitating the students' academic journeys
- Academic Request Facilitation: Expertly assist students in navigating the process of preparing petitions, letters of permission, and other academic requests, streamlining their educational experiences
- Continuous Professional Growth: Commit to continuous professional development, staying abreast of evolving academic requirements, admissions procedures, and university policies relevant to student issues. Maintain a cutting-edge understanding of the academic landscape

Undergraduate Student Experience, Outreach and Event Management
- Student Experience Leadership: Serve as the primary liaison for all SAS Undergraduate Office student experience initiatives, offering expert counsel and clear guidance on faculty policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with departmental goals
