At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Summary

Every year, the campus carries out millions of dollars in renovations. As part of these renovations, a considerable amount of furniture makes its way to the landfills - estimated at 100 tonnes costing $43,000 in disposal fees. Other surplus goods and equipment such as scientific equipment are regularly generated on campus, and there is currently very limited reuse of these assets. The Furniture Reuse Initiative, Reuse-it UBC, and Green Labs Program are interdepartmental initiatives between Infrastructure Development, Financial Services, and Sustainability and Engineering (Campus + Community Planning) respectively. These initiatives are to be advanced and interconnected to increase and optimize the reuse of University furniture and equipment, resulting in cost savings to UBC departments, reduced waste disposal, and reduced GHG emissions - advancing the circular economy. As of the end of 2021, the Furniture Reuse Initiative has already rehomed approx. 1000 used items, for a ‘money not spent’ value of approx. $500,000.

The Reuse Initiative Coordinator (“Coordinator”) will be responsible for the management of the online reuse platform, day to day reuse operations and supporting further development and expansion of the Reuse Initiative. The platform will be split into two main areas:
1. Furniture reuse: under the supervision of Facilities Planning, this work will focus on leading and managing the reuse of office furniture across the campus.

2. Scientific and other equipment reuse: with guidance from the Planning & Sustainability Engineer in Campus & Community Planning and in conjunction with the Green Labs program, this work will focus on reuse of scientific and other equipment.

Organizational Status

The Coordinator will report to and take direction from the Facilities Planner assigned to the Furniture Reuse Initiative. For the scientific and other goods portion of work, there will be “dotted line” reporting to the Planning and Sustainability Engineer who will provide guidance; the Coordinator will also liaise and obtain guidance as needed from the Green Labs Program Lead both in in Campus and Community Planning, Sustainability + Engineering. The Coordinator will also liaise and engage with Communications staff, the various administration groups and faculties on campus, as well as various external organizations focused on the reuse of furniture and scientific equipment. Position is 0.8 of full time, two year term, with potential for future expansion of hours and/or extension.
