The Road Safety Division at the Department of Public Works is responsible for the administration of drivers and vehicles in the province. We are responsible for the policies, legislation, and regulations that guide Road Safety in our province. We operate in a proactive regulatory environment. We maintain records regarding driver licensing, medical fitness, driver competency, and compliance, all working together to ensure a safe road network.

**About Our Opportunity**:
**Primary Accountabilities**:

- Review and analyze complex documentation such as medical reports and tests, driving records, law enforcement documents and motor vehicle collision reports; conduct investigations and make recommendations and/or decisions in accordance with the above acts and regulations to the Deputy Registrar.
- Examining driving behaviors in respect to a person's ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and provides recommendations to the Deputy Registrar which includes the suspension of the client's driving privileges.
- Oversee the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program designed to support vehicle and driver safety for the province. This position supports the Deputy Registrar from a quality control lens, ensuring the work within the program is aligned with the Criminal Code of Canada, the NS Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations etc. This includes the management and oversight of the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Services contract and ensuring the service provider meets the requirements of the program.
- Ensures the effective management of human resources by setting and evaluating staff performance targets, promoting diversity and a healthy workplace, demonstrating leadership competencies, respecting corporate human resources practices, promoting teamwork and individual development and maintaining communications.
- Oversees service standards, creating and implementing productivity monitoring tools, developing policies and procedures, identification of issues and technology requirements. Conducts research using primary data sources and selects relevant information to enable the analysis of key themes and trends.
- Participates on committees representing the department and participates in administrative suspension hearings and ensures that decisions are implemented.

**Qualifications and Experience**:
High school completion plus 10 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.

Ability to timely and accurately examine a high volume of complex information is essential. Experience providing appropriate recommendations and/or decisions in accordance with acts and regulations is required.

You must possess experience supervising human resources and overseeing operations, setting service standards, developing policies and procedures.

Proven ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and maintain confidentiality. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required to deal with sensitive, emotional and confidential issues. Proven ability to be flexible and work collaboratively in a team environment.

Computer software skills, such as word processing, presentations and spreadsheets are also necessary as well as experience in maintaining electronic databases.

The incumbent will have a good understanding of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act as it relates to the access, protection and release of personal information.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, skill-testing of basic math/literacy assessment, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

**Equivalency**:
An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Related equivalencies may include, but are not limited to:

- A bachelors degree in a related field and 6 related years of experience

**Working Conditions**:
Most of your work is spent located in a comfortable office environment. This position can be extremely stressful as you will be exposed to frequent pressure to respond quickly to issues that arise. A high level of judgement is required often in indeterminate situations in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
