The Opportunity

MFRC is looking for a passionate and energetic Food Coordinator to support the implementation of our new Food Strategy and specifically to increase the amount of food that is shared through our programs. The Food Coordinator will be responsible for implementing new systems and processes to allow for a more coordinated approach to menu planning, food ordering and purchasing, and snack and meal preparation. They will also be involved in offering workshops to community members on food preparation and related topics. The position will report to the Program Director, Managers, and work alongside Program Cooridnators.

Job Responsibilities:

- Support program staff to plan snack and meal menus for their program in a coordinated way that takes advantage of different food purchasing budgets, food sales and seasonality/ what is being grown in our own farm and hydroponic operation.
- Maintain organized documentation of purchases and food budgets
- Coordinate the placement and delivery of weekly food orders.
- Coordinate the preparation of snacks and meals as required in a manner that takes advantage of large batch preparation.
- Coordinate and support community food pantry and fridge, including receiving donations and ensuring the pantry is stocked on a regular basis.
- Coordinate the food storage space across programs.
- Support volunteers to assist with food preparation, cleaning and other roles as required.
- Monitoring food-related research, best practices and advocacy campaigns
- Supporting the capturing of food related stories and metrics
- Maintain an organized, well-run, safe and clean kitchen with the support from other team members and volunteers.
- Other duties as assigned.

Necessary Skills/Qualifications and Other Requirements:
Be a positive role model and enjoy working in teams and in community organizations.

Strong menu planning, food ordering and food preparation skills.

Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to work in a kitchen setting.
- Ensures the safety and well-being of volunteers and other staff members assisting in the kitchen at all times.

Ability to comply with policies regarding confidentiality, privacy and record keeping.

Experience with conflict resolution and problem-solving.

Have a strong understanding of culturally appropriate food preferences.

Ability to be adaptable and flexible with ongoing changes to the program.

Experience or education (or combination) in food preparation in particular proven capacity to plan menus, order food and prepare food for large numbers of people and to support community members around menu planning, food preparation or nutrition is an asset.

Food handling experience and certificate.

Computer skills (MS Word and Excel).

Familiarity with the Malvern neighborhood or surrounding neighborhoods is an asset.

Clear Vulnerable Sector Screen if over 18 years of age.

Terms of Employment:
$45,000-$50,000 plus 100% paid benefits, three weeks of paid vacation, three personal days and other paid time off including over the holiday break + sick days (after-probation).

37.5 hours/week with limited weekend and evening shifts to support programs and events. Given that we are a front-line service organization, we require all staff to work in-person at least 4 days a week. Our office is located on a TTC bus line and is accessible by car.
