The Director of Safety Codes, Permits & Inspections, reporting to the Branch Manager of Development Services, is responsible for ensuring that the City's safety code services are administered effectively and efficiently to ensure compliance with regulations and a safe built environment for all Edmontonians. As an active member of the Branch's leadership team, the Director will play an integral part in shaping policies, programs, and operational decisions that impact our community.
- Establish the section’s work plan aligned with City Plan, strategic plans and policies.
- Ensure efficient and effective permitting and inspections services that comply with the Alberta Safety Codes Act and the City’s approved Quality Management Plan, and that support Council and Corporate goals.
- Collaborate with regulatory and industry partners including other municipalities, the Safety Codes Council, and Alberta Municipal Affairs to develop and support innovative, objective-based approaches to ensuring compliance with the National Building, Energy, Electrical, and Plumbing and Gas codes.
- Work closely with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services to ensure a co-operative approach to the administration of the complimentary building and fire codes.
- Ensure front line services and operations are delivered in a way that aligns with corporate strategy, Council direction and provincial accreditation.
- Establish and exemplify the desired culture throughout the Section that supports the branch vision as well as the Corporate Leadership Principles.
- Apply GBA+ to the development and review of policies, practices and frameworks.
- Ensure all Occupational Health and Safety, ENVISO, procurement, project management and all other City policies and procedures are followed within the section.
- In-depth knowledge of the Alberta Safety Codes System, including the Safety Codes Act and associated regulations.
- Knowledge, training and/or education in Engineering, Architecture, Construction, Business Administration, Planning or other related disciplines.
- Certification as a Safety Codes Officer, or the ability to achieve the certification is required.
- Experience in a senior leadership role within a complex organization.
- Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams accountable for large, politically sensitive and complex projects.
- Experience managing teams in a unionized environment.
Assets:
- A professional designation in a related field.
- Additional training in strategic management, policy development, public administration, government relations, project management and/or change management.
- Ability to initiate and navigate change in a unionized and Safety Codes Act accredited workplace.
- Operate as a strategically agile leader able to anticipate business opportunities and influence enterprise-wide policy planning and initiatives.
- Actively demonstrate the values and behaviours supportive of equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
- Think strategically to address large, complex issues, to manage projects while steering dynamically.
- Strong political acumen, strategic planning, issue resolution and decision-making skills.
