The YMCA of National Capital Region (NCR) is seeking a motivated, future-oriented professional for the position of Associate Vice President of Health, Fitness, Aquatics and Camping Services (AVP). The AVP will be a member of the Executive Team, reporting to the Vice President, Employment & Newcomer Services and Camp.
YMCA NCR is located in downtown Ottawa amidst the buzz of the nation’s capital. Surrounded by parks, rivers and forests, the area has a vibrant arts and culture scene with a wide array of cultural, recreational and social activities for families and individuals. The National Capital Region is a historic area with exceptional educational institutions and professional opportunities making it a coveted destination to live and work.
The YMCA of NCR has embarked on an exciting new chapter and the AVP will play a critical role in transforming the HFA model to meet the needs and aspirations of our community, today. The AVP will lead the development and implementation of strategies to ensure growth and meaningful community impact in HFA supported by excellence in operational execution. This role requires a motivated and skilled professional with the ability to chart new pathways while inspiring and encouraging the staff team alongside external stakeholders.
Previous experience in a health and fitness and camp portfolio is essential to succeed in this role and previous experience in a multifaceted non-profit organization is desired.

What do you offer?
The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Health, Fitness, Aquatics and Camping Services is a member of the Executive Team, reporting to the Vice President, Employment & Newcomer Services and Camp.
The AVP will thoughtfully set and drive the 2025 strategic plan with a focus on growth, innovation, technology, culture, and people leadership. The AVP is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of multiple camps and health, fitness, and aquatics locations, ranging from recruitment, hiring, program development, and overall participant satisfaction.
The AVP establishes a stimulating, safe, healthy and community-focused culture that delivers high participant satisfaction and achieves maximum financial performance while ensuring the Association’s standard operating procedures, participant service, programs and promotions are efficiently executed.
The position includes direct line supervision of the Managers. The position carries Association-wide responsibility for program quality assurance and participant involvement.
The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Health, Fitness, Aquatics and Camping Services is a model for participant service behavior by directly collecting participant feedback to identify training and development opportunities for team members.
Some of the tasks of this position include:
- Setting and driving the 2025 strategic plan with a focus on growth, innovation, technology, culture and people leadership.
- Overseeing the daily operations of multiple camps and health, fitness and aquatics locations, ranging from recruitment, hiring, program development, and overall participant satisfaction.
- Completing budget monitoring, variance reporting, and achievement of revenue targets and control of expenses to achieve or surpass targeted contributions.
- Developing, implementing and interpreting all policies and guidelines affecting the operations for which they are responsible.
- Directly supervising, coaching and supporting a team of Managers.
- Developing and leading all staff within the programs for which they have responsibility.
- Achieving retention and programming quality targets.
- Creating and maintaining a culture that delivers high participant satisfaction and achieves maximum financial performance.
What qualifications and abilities are we looking for?
The successful candidate will have the following:
Education
- University degree or Master’s degree in a related field
Language
- Fluent in English, oral and written
- Other languages are an asset
Experience, Skills and Abilities
- 10 years of experience in advanced program management
- Extensive experience managing multiple sites and locations
- Extensive knowledge of camp, health, fitness, aquatics and recreation
- Experience in day camp, overnight camp and outdoor programming
- Extensive knowledge in budget development and monitoring including revenue, expense and capital program investment
- Proven ability to support, influence and manage staff
- Ability to successfully envision and swiftly execute results-driven strategies from concept to implementation
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- High emotional intelligence (i.e., self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, social skills)
- Proven business acumen and strategic program management skills
- High level of innovation, creativity and analysis related to the identification and resolution of programs
Additional Requirements:
- Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
- A Police Record check, not more than 6 months old is required. Police Records checks are reviewed on an individual basis and the offense(s) - if any - is considered in the decision-making process in relation to the requirement of working with children, therefore not eliminating all candidates with a record from being offered a position.
- Semi-annually, staff must complete the mandatory training for the protection of Children & Youth and submit the certificate of completion.
- Applicants must have access to their own personal to travel between locations and to community meetings. They will be required to be away for provincial, national or international meetings from time to time.
