Reporting to the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (VPRI), the Associate Vice-President, Innovation, Partnership & Entrepreneurship (AVP, IPE) brings the highest standards of professionalism and dedication to achieve maximum quality and productivity in the delivery of science and innovation services and supports to the University of Ottawa community. The portfolio serves the University’s mission to be among the leading public research-intensive universities in the world, in support of the University’s strategic objectives.

The incumbent will play a key role in securing the University’s leadership position within the local and national science & innovation ecosystems. Science services include activities to support research thematics supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Innovation services include activities supporting commercialization, entrepreneurship, intellectual property management, collaborative agreement, partnership development and new venture creation, with a diverse range of private and public sector organizations.

The AVP, IPE will enhance and expand the University’s science and innovation activities, identify internal and external opportunities and foster partnerships with industry and public organizations to increase science and innovation activities and innovation-related research revenues. These partnerships will seek to increase knowledge translation of commercial and social innovations that will have broad socio-economic impact and public benefits.

**Major activities**

As a senior member of the OVPRI executive team, the incumbent will play a key leadership role in the strategic development and management of the innovation portfolio: the Innovation Support Services (ISS) group, the Kanata North (uOKN) campus, the Ottawa Health Innovation Hub (OHIH), key innovation-driven institutional large-scale institutional initiatives such as Cybersecurity Hub, Smart connected 5G Campus and the Entrepreneurship Hub (e-Hub).

The Associate Vice-President, Innovation, Partnership & Entrepreneurship:

- Execute full managerial authority over the staff in the work unit/group (about 30 people in total)
- Establish a climate of teamwork within the portfolio of the VPRI as well as faculties by engaging staff and building on their experience and areas of expertise.
- Provides senior level advice and support to the VPRI in the development of plans and goals for the VPRI portfolio;
- In consultation with the Faculties, provides advice to the VP, Research and Innovation on emerging challenges and opportunities that can lead to changes in strategic priorities and direction the University takes in relation to research and infrastructure;
- Identify new business and research opportunities for Faculties that will generate revenue or other benefits, consistent with VPRI portfolio principles and goals;
- Cultivate strategic research alliances with private and public sector entities;
- Work with communications professionals to promote and encourage the timely coverage of the University’s achievements in science and innovation, entrepreneurship and partnership within and beyond the University;
- Establish an overall innovation strategy for the portfolio, accompanied by clear objectives (short and long-term) and supported by detailed workplans for each team 1) to expand and accelerate the development of strategic partnerships between the University of Ottawa and external organizations, 2) to improve innovation services delivery to the Faculties and Affiliated Research Institutes, and 3) to enhance accurate monitoring and reporting of key performance indicators.
- Chairs key institutional committees on behalf of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation;
- Represents the University on several key external advisory committees and Boards.
