Product Development Manager Responsibilities include:

Drive the end-to-end product development process, including innovation concept development, brief development, benchmark identification, formula evaluations and documentation, and launch production.

Formula Development (Innovation & Renovation):

  • Partner with Brand Team on Innovation strategy and pipeline development.
  • Curate competitive and trend analysis for new product/collection launches to inform potential new product launches/white space opportunities.
  • Write new product concepts with clear benefits, reasons to believe, and claims.
  • Translate brand objectives into clear product briefs for contract manufacturer and manages the development of process to ensure alignment with brand vision and consumer needs.
  • Work directly with contract manufacturer R&D teams and provides technical expertise in formulation throughout process, leveraging a strong knowledge base of hair biology.

Performance Assessment:

  • Evaluates submissions with a focus on product performance & quality.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in existing portfolio for formula renovations.
  • Track and evaluate internal feedback for new product formulations as needed.
  • Assess packaging functionality in conjunction with formula to ensure compatibility and maximum performance.
  • Responsible for clearly articulated redirects with R&D partners.
  • Review production batches against formula standard and tracks comments to issue to the supplier.

Claims Validation:

  • Support all Consumer and Analytical Claims testing initiatives inclusive of budget tracking in collaboration with the Brand teams.

Launch Preparation:

  • Attend first production of new products to identify any potential issues on the line.
  • Collaborate on packaging and other marketing copy as it pertains to benefits, ingredients, and how-to-use.
  • Assist in writing fact sheets and compiling research on key ingredients.

Project Management:

  • Manage the day-to-day communication and activities between Brand, Operations, Reg Compliance & Quality, and Contract Manufacturers and executes activities based on priorities set by Manager, driving tasks to completion and escalating any potential issues with the goal of delivering all projects on time and in full.
  • Strong partnership with Operations teams to procure all sampling needs for various development milestones such as internal testing, large scale consumer testing, early launch needs, etc.
  • Support approval process and resolution of pending items to ensure smooth process from development to commercialization.

Additional Focus Areas:

  • Conduct hands-on product testing, including performance evaluation of shampoos, conditioners, treatments, and styling products.
  • Assess products on different hair types and textures, focusing on performance such benefits as moisture, repair, smoothness, and shine ect.
  • Provide record detailed feedback on product feel, efficacy, and user experience .
  • Must be able to work with all hair types with a focus on textured hair. Utilize advanced hairstyling and treatment techniques to replicate consumer use scenarios and evaluate results.
  • Offer insights into industry trends, styling practices, and professional needs in salon and retail environments.
  • Perform salon-style demonstrations to test products under realistic conditions and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Partner with formulators to refine product performance, ensuring alignment with the brand's vision and consumer expectations.
  • Collaborate with marketing and regulatory teams to ensure product claims are substantiated and resonate with the target audience.
  • Maintain detailed records of product testing, including visual documentation and feedback forms.
  • Generate comprehensive reports summarizing findings and recommendations for formula adjustments or enhancements.
  • Track and organize product stability and compatibility testing results in collaboration with the technical team.

Qualifications:

  • BS/BA or advanced degree in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, Chemical Engineering, Biology, or a related field; additional certifications or training in cosmetic formulation is a plus.
  • 7+ years 'experience in product development Haircare.
  • Licenses in Professional Hairstyling and Trichology is a plus.
  • Understanding of fragrance including compatibility with formulations, stability testing, and experience working with fragrance houses is a plus.
  • Knowledge of category (major competitors, target users, industry trends) preferred.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit to remove obstacles and accomplish goals.
  • Understanding of Haircare category and Haircare consumer.
  • High proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint..
  • Hybrid Office: Able to work in office at least 3 days/week.
