Position Title: Legal Support Navigator
Department: Lives in Transition Program
Employment Type: Contract, PT (exact hours will be determined based on client needs and
volume of work. A schedule for service will be established).
Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Reports To: Program Manager

Job Summary: As a Legal Support Navigator, you will serve as a critical link between individuals
seeking legal assistance and the resources available to them, particularly related to Family Law.
Your role is to guide clients through the legal process, provide information about available
services, and facilitate access to legal support and resources. By offering empathetic support
and practical guidance, you will help individuals navigate complex legal systems and empower
them to address their legal needs effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Client Intake and Assessment:
    Conduct intake interviews with individuals seeking legal assistance, gathering
    relevant information about their legal issues, concerns, and needs.
    Determine appropriate next steps for the individual based on their needs and
    provide appropriate direction to the individual on action items.
  2. Information and Referral:
    Provide accurate and up-to-date information about available legal services,
    resources, and support programs to clients within the local ecosystem.
    Make appropriate referrals to legal aid organizations, pro bono attorneys,
    government agencies, and community resources based on clients' specific needs.
    Assist individuals in accessing and completing basic legal documents pertaining
    to their situation.
  3. Case Management Support:
    Assist clients in navigating the legal process, explaining procedures, timelines,
    and documentation requirements.
    Coordinate appointments, court appearances, and attend meetings with legal
    representatives on behalf of clients.
  4. Legal Education and Empowerment:
    Educate clients about their legal rights, responsibilities, and options for resolving
    disputes or legal issues.
    Empower clients to advocate for themselves by providing tools, resources, and
    information to help them make informed decisions.
  5. Advocacy and Support:
    Advocate on behalf of clients to ensure they receive fair and equitable treatment
    within the legal system.
    Provide emotional support and guidance to clients facing legal challenges,
    helping them navigate stressful situations with confidence.
  6. Documentation and Reporting:
    Maintain accurate records of client interactions, case details, and referrals in
    accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
    Prepare reports and documentation as required for program evaluation, funding
    requirements, and grant reporting.

Mandatory Requirements:
Must be able to provide a clean Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check.
Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
Must be familiar and have experience with various legal issues pertaining to family
violence, child custody disputes, family law, parenting orders, EPOs, etc.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in social work, criminal justice, pre-law, or a related field (Paralegal
certification or legal studies preferred).
Previous experience in legal assistance, social services, or client advocacy.
Knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, and systems especially within the Family
Law domain.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport and
build trust with clients.
Empathy, patience, and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse
backgrounds.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
