The Law Society of BC is seeking a permanent, full-time Freedom and Information Analyst in our Information & Privacy department. The Freedom of Information Analyst (FOI Analyst) is responsible for assisting the Information and Privacy team with ensuring the Law Society’s compliance with the legislative requirements of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (“FIPPA”) in relation to access to information requests and the collection and use of personal information.

The duties of this position include:
  • Handling the intake of formal requests for information made pursuant to FIPPA, including preparing acknowledgement letters, calculating and monitoring statutory timelines, and clarifying the scope of the information being requested.
  • Independently searching for, identifying and reviewing records that are responsive to requests, including liaising with relevant departments to ensure all relevant records have been located and retrieved.
  • Determining any exceptions under FIPPA that apply to those records; determining whether they must be withheld or disclosed in whole or in part; and preparing draft redactions for review by the Information and Privacy Officer and/or the Manager, Privacy, Records and Information Management.
  • Providing instructions and guidance to the Information and Privacy Assistant.
  • Corresponding and liaising with members of the Law Society, members of the public and staff at other public bodies to process requests.
  • Consulting appropriate Law Society staff members, the Information and Privacy Officer, the Manager, Privacy, Records and Information Management and the Chief Operating Officer for more complex records requests/protection of privacy issues.
  • Working with departments to advocate for best practices in managing files and materials in compliance with FIPPA.
  • Providing advice and assistance to staff members.
  • Responding to informal requests for information that relate to the Information and Privacy group.
  • Providing back up for the duties of the Information and Privacy Officer as necessary.
  • Such other duties as the Chief Operating Officer or Manager, Privacy, Records and Information Management may require.
Qualifications
  • A university degree in a related field, or completion of a recognized paralegal program, and three to five years of related work experience, preferably in a government, regulatory or legal setting.
  • Experience and working knowledge of BC’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, relevant orders by the Office of the Information & Privacy Commissioner (OIPC), cases, trends and issues.
  • Completion of an Information Access and/or Protection of Privacy Certificate Program is an asset (i.e. CIPP/C, CIPT or CIPM).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to exercise tact and discretion with staff at all levels within the organization.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage requests, identify priorities and remain organized in order to ensure that legislated deadlines are met.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electronic information systems, applications and information management processes.

The salary range for this position is $75,146 to $81,680.
