Role Responsibilities

The Indigenous Policy Advisor contributes to the continuous improvements of branch operations, and supports branch, division, ministry, and Government of Alberta (GoA) initiatives. Reporting to the Manager, Indigenous Health Policy, the Advisor is responsible for coordinating and participating in projects and initiatives that support improved health outcomes and more effective health care delivery for Indigenous peoples in Alberta.

As a pivotal member of the team, the incumbent is responsible for the following:

Develop policy options and strategic approaches for Indigenous health policy, by synthesizing and analyzing complex material in collaboration with cross-divisional and cross-ministry partners, other provinces, and territories, as well as First Nations, Métis, and Inuit organizations. Policy coordination and advice, including supporting Ministry colleagues to draft Cabinet Reports, policies, or programs with information and advice on Indigenous impacts, assist or advise on Indigenous policy planning and execution, and supporting Ministry and cross-Ministry initiatives with Indigenous health impacts. Applies knowledge and strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills to multiple, concurrent activities. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, exercise independent judgment, priority setting, and decision making while working in a complex environment.  Support the identification of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit health needs, health service gaps, and build community connections with Ministry service planning groups. Work Collaboratively with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit partners to assist in integrating community priorities with broader health system priorities as part of the broader health system planning.  Conduct research, monitor media, identify emerging trends, and accumulate intelligence on Indigenous health policy issues in Alberta and nationally.  Enable informed and high-quality decision-making by providing policy advice and strategic direction to the Minister, Deputy Minister, and Assistant Deputy Minister.
