Job Title: Personal Support Worker - Overnight Shifts

VON Canada is seeking a skilled and compassionate Personal Support Worker to join our team in providing high-quality care to our clients in need of overnight support.

Job Summary:

The Personal Support Worker will provide personal support and homemaking services to clients and families within the framework of VON policies, procedures, and standards. This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Client Assessment and Care Planning: Observe and evaluate the client's or family's home, personal situation, and client and family care plan to determine if any need for change in the personal support care plan is required and whether the client's and family's needs have been met.
  • Personal Support Tasks: Perform personal support tasks reflecting the needs of the client and family, including light cleaning, preparation of nutritious meals, care of clothes, shopping for the client as required, and monitoring and maintaining household safety.
  • Personal Care: Provide personal care as directed by the Personal Support Program Manager or immediate supervisor, including assisting the client in walking, climbing or descending stairs, getting into and out of bed, eating, dressing, and other matters of personal hygiene.
  • Respite Care: Provide respite care to clients as required.
  • Family Support: Support clients' families by providing child care as required to allow for family relief.
  • Communication: Communicate with appropriate members of the health team regarding the management of the client's or family's homemaking, physical, and emotional needs and inform an immediate supervisor or Manager of any changes or concerns.
Requirements:
  • Education and Experience: Must have a certificate in Personal Support Worker certification or Developmental Services Worker diploma; Must have a minimum of 2 years experience working as a PSW or DSW.
  • Skills and Abilities: Strong communication skills, both verbally and written; Ability to communicate effectively with clients and families in a clear and effective manner that demonstrates respect, empathy, and understanding; Good assessment skills; Awareness of community resources; Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team or independently as required.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics. Individuals in the role are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
