The HR Advisor, Faculty partners with internal and external parties in the delivery of HR advisory services to the University community. The HRA, Faculty provides subject matter expertise to People Leaders and Regular + Non-Regular Faculty staff areas across the full spectrum of HR generalist services including talent acquisition, retention, employee engagement, performance management, workforce planning and optimal employee relations. The HR Advisor, Faculty engages in their work with an aim to fostering a culture of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) for all those who attend our campus for work or for study.

As the successful applicant, you should possess: University degree required, preferably with a specialty in Industrial Relations, HR or another relevant field of study.Three to Five (3-5) years' of progressively responsible HR generalist experience with an emphasis in Employee+Labour Relations, recruitment, and performance management within a multi-union environment.An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.Considerable experience advising People Leaders and working with collective agreementsExperience in the development and execution of recruitment strategies, performance management initiatives and programs.Experience providing HR services in a post-secondary education environment and supporting Faculty relations considered a strong asset.Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation, CPHR Candidate or relevant professional designation in human resources or labour relations preferred.Working knowledge and understanding of employment and labour legislation, regulatory bodies (i.e., Labour Relations Code, Human Rights Code, Employment Equity) and ability to interpret/explain/apply to the HR practiceWell-developed consultation, facilitation, conflict resolution and relationship-building skills geared toward an organized labour settingAbility to coach people leaders, staff, and faculty on a variety of HR related topics, while reinforcing leading practices with respect to recruitment, retention and engagement; labour relations; conflict resolution, performance management and JEDIAbility to establish positive and effective work relationships with all staff and faculty accessing Human Resources services.Ability to exercise sound judgement and confidentialityIntermediate to advanced computer literacy including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.), Adobe, HR Information Systems (i.e., Colleague, Banner, PeopleSoft etc.).Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision and to contribute effectively within a team environment.Effective organizational skills and an aptitude for detail and accuracy.Excellent oral and written communication skillsAbility to prioritize workload to meet deadlines and perform a variety of tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions.Ability to conduct research and maintain professional networks to sustain awareness of industry best practices, emerging trends, and leading strategies in HR management.
Typical Duties include:
- Provides HR generalist expertise, advisement and support to Academic Affairs leadership and Regular + Non-Regular Faculty staff across all functional areas including recruitment, retention, engagement, performance management, and workforce planning.
- Partners with the Vice-President, Academic + Provost and the Deans, in the recruitment of faculty, ensuring effective attraction practices and compliance with established procedures, policies, and collective agreements. Specific tasks may include: conducting diversity audits; developing special program applications for restricted searches; providing training to hiring committees; posting open positions; crafting contract of employment offers, coordinating immigration requirements for foreign workers and general hiring committee support activities.
- Guides the interpretation and appropriate application of the collective agreement(s). Consults with the HR Director, Advising Services to address complex or ambiguous labour matters. Assists the University in proactively addressing faculty concerns and resolving grievances. Actively ssupports the resolution of grievances and Human Rights complaints including third-party processes such as mediations and arbitrations. May also assist in exploring non-western approaches to conflict resolution.
- Develops relationships with the Faculty Association to proactively address issues and opportunities through interest-based problem solving and communication. Liaises with the HR Director, Advising Services and AVP Human Resources on the development of final resolutions, and securing financial approval from the appropriate parties when resolutions contemplate a financial settlement or a significant cost to the organization.
- Provides one-on-one coaching to Deans, Assistant/Associate Deans, and faculty on a variety of HR related topics, including, but not limited to, professional development, performance management, change management, engaging in difficult conversations, and supporting a culture of engagement and collegiality.
- Manages faculty-specific programs (i.e., Developmental Reviews, Sabbaticals, Tenure + Promotion) in accordance with the collective agreement.
- With support from the HR Director, Advising Services, leads the University's Duty to Investigate on matters related to employee conduct, including engaging with the University leadership team in the development of an investigation strategy. Furthermore, the HR Advisor, Faculty develops reports summarizing findings of investigations and provides recommendations on potential remedial action for the University Executive team's consideration.
- Composes correspondence and prepares a variety of reports and statistical analysis of trends within the assigned portfolio.
- Works with others to establish documented procedures, guidelines and practice directives for HR services and Labour Relations with a view to continuous development and improvement.
- Supervises the confidential maintenance of faculty records in accordance with established policy and FOIPPA requirements. Coordinates with the HR Coordinator, Programs, Policy + Records to ensure employee changes are documented and reflected in the HRIS while appropriate parties are kept informed (i.e., Payroll). Works closely with the University's Privacy Officer on all matters relating to Faculty employment privacy matters.
- Establishes effective working relationships with ECUAD employees. Acts as a resource to staff and faculty on policies and procedures related to academic curriculum and structure. Provides guidance on contract provisions and other issues as required. Works in collaboration with the HR Director, Advising Services on any potential variations to standard procedures.
- In partnership with the HR Advisor, Non-Regular Faculty and other departments/teams, organizes and coordinates the new faculty orientation and onboarding activities.
- Actively participates in and facilitates various committees (including Faculty Joint Consultation Committee meetings). Responsible for duties including agenda preparation, minute-taking, following up on action items, research, report writing, and drafting of memorandums of agreement.
- Aids the HR Director, Advising Services and the AVP HR on special or confidential projects including best practise research. Relieves HR Director, Advising Services and AVP, HR of procedural administrative functions. Provides back up to other Human Resources positions as required.
- Fosters a culture of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) for all those who attend the University for work or study by remaining current in JEDI trends that impact the HR practice and University life. Makes recommendations to the HR Director, Advising Services on how to enhance HR services in this regard.
- Performs other related duties as required.
