We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to prepare water and soil samples for analysis, perform testing procedures, and maintain laboratory equipment and supplies.

Job Title: Laboratory Technician – Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons

About the Role:

  • Prepare water and soil samples for laboratory analysis, including extraction, standard and reagent preparation, and instrument maintenance.
  • Perform testing procedures, including basic testing and troubleshooting.
  • Review laboratory information management system (LIMS) reports to plan and organize daily work.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure accuracy in sample preparation and analysis.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including PCs, pipettes, thermal cyclers, and automated sequencers.
  • Assess and correct problems with laboratory operations according to SOP guidelines and ISO 17025 regulation criteria.
  • Meet quality and turnaround time (TAT) specifications required by clients.
  • Identify and document sample deviations, non-conformances, and process deviations, and report to the supervisor.
  • Employ proper laboratory techniques to minimize risk of mislabeling, sample mix-up, and cross-contamination.
  • Provide input to corrective action procedures and report problems and corrective actions to the supervisor.
  • Provide updates on workstation status, including advance notification of delays.
  • Evaluate and initiate problem-solving in all areas of the laboratory.
  • Participate in developing SOPs and general work instructions.
  • Participate in the development and validation of new procedures and instruments, as required.
  • Monitor the laboratory to improve efficiencies and reduce costs.
  • Support and comply with all company policies, quality system, and health and safety program.
  • Participate in laboratory and health and safety meetings.
  • Provide training and guidance to junior staff.
  • Maintain training records and relevant qualifications.
  • Keep work areas clean, neat, and organized.
  • Be available for shift work, overtime, and weekend work.

Requirements:

  • Technical diploma or B.Sc. in a relevant field.
  • Sound knowledge of sample handling procedures and quality assurance protocols.
  • Knowledge of laboratory occupational health and safety practices.
  • Excellent manual dexterity, record-keeping, calculations, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Flexible to perform varying duties to accommodate changing priorities.
  • Accurately follows SOPs and instructions.
  • Detail-oriented with accurate record-keeping skills.
  • Good time-management, communication, multi-tasking, and priority-setting skills.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Positive outlook with an ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Adapts to a changing environment.
  • Works both independently and as part of a team.
  • Learns quickly.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet challenging deadlines.
