Do you dream of seeing research discoveries become life-saving reality?

Do you have what it takes to drive winning partnerships with industry to help create a healthier world?

Do you aspire to be at the very heart of Toronto's thriving life sciences ecosystem?

Join Canada's leader in medical research commercialization and work with some of the best and brightest in the field.

Why join the Commercialization at UHN team?

Canada's largest academic research hospital, University Health Network (UHN) has been ranked by Research Infosource as #1 in Canada's Top 40 Research Hospitals since 2011, and our four hospitals are among the top ranked globally. Based on licensing revenues, UHN stands as Canada's leader in medical research commercialization. Licensing income generated via commercialization is fully re-invested into UHN's hospitals and research institutes to fuel and sustain innovation and discovery.

‍Commercialization is one of UHN's top 5 Strategic Priorities. In this role, you will have an opportunity to deliver on that priority by becoming involved with some of the most cutting-edge research and medical innovations. You'll play a critical role in taking ground-breaking discoveries one big step closer to actively changing patient lives. Under your leadership, UHN research discoveries will be developed into digital health tools, devices and diagnostics helping patients in Canada and around the world.

Dream Big with Commercialization at UHN

Together with the world-class UHN research community, your work will deliver on our Commercialization Lives Here strategy, elevating Canada as a world destination for life science commercialization. You will be working with some of North America's leading life science organizations - and adding to our impressive line-up of start-ups including BlueRock Therapeutics, Trillium Therapeutics, Adela Bio Inc., Treadwell Therapeutics, AvroBio, and more. These companies, first incubated within UHN, are among many others that have collectively injected more than $5 billion into the economy.

Hundreds of contracts accelerating research and commercialization partnerships are stewarded by Commercialization at UHN every year, helping bring research that much closer to patient impact. These include contracts related to the exchange of biomaterials and other enabling tools via Data and Material Transfer Agreements (D/MTAs), academic Collaboration Agreements, and other Research and Commercial Agreements. While some of these relationships involve academic collaborations with our UHN researchers and clinicians, most involve corporate third-parties such as pharmaceutical and medical device companies, or government agencies. It is imperative that appropriate legal agreements are in place to govern these relationships as well as to manage and mitigate risk to UHN and UHN patient participants.

Position Summary

The Data, Digital and AI commercialization portfolio at UHN represents one of our fastest growing commercialization portfolios. The concentration of world-class AI scientists, researchers, and clinicians, supported by state-of-the art infrastructure within UHN represents one of the world's largest and as yet largely untapped opportunities for commercialization. Indeed, many new inventions at UHN now engage AI in some way, from AI algorithms used to augment diagnostic capacity for identifying cancer biomarkers in the blood, to triaging patients for specialized cardiac treatment, to a host of other novel and emerging applications across the healthcare spectrum.

UHN has recently initiated a number of high-profile programs and partnerships in this space, including an international data sharing partnership platform created together with key world class health-research institutions in the US, Middle East and beyond, as well as the creation of a new AI Hub that leverages a close strategic relationship with Toronto's Vector Institute. The potential to capitalize on these technologies and partnership is still emerging, and Commercialization at UHN needs a true visionary to lead the charge

In this role, you will continue to develop UHN's commercialization strategy around Data, Digital and AI to foster and harness commercial opportunity for UHN's uniquely competitive collection of digital assets, including patient derived data, AI-related algorithms, and other digital and software tools; you will then lead strategic execution of these towards the right commercial opportunities, not just within Canada, but globally.

To achieve this mandate, you will work closely with the best clinical, research and IT teams in North America, in coordination with members of the Commercialization at UHN licensing team to identify novel opportunities across all UHN research and clinical areas. This will include close interaction with AI researchers and capabilities across the organization.

You will also work closely with our IP, legal and data-governance groups to protect and execute on high-profile commercial relationships, whether they be sponsored collaborations, licensing and risk-share opportunities with industry partners, or the creation of spin-off companies, to maximize return on UHN assets and impact to patients.

In order to succeed as the institutional owner of this rapidly accelerating and high-profile portfolio, you will be an experienced digital technology business development professional who brings a demonstrable track record of success in closing R&D and commercialization agreements, including software and related intellectual property licensing deals; you will possess a deep network of private sector, investment and venture connections; you will have demonstrated a career progression suggestive of a passion for the field and application to health-care; and you will hold a "roll-up your sleeves", " do what it takes" attitude that embraces UHN's core vision of creating a healthier world.
