The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Director, Process Safety & Services to join our Safety and Governance group, based in Calgary, AB, Houston, TX or Charleston, WV. Reporting to the Vice President, Safety & Governance, the Director, Process Safety & Services, will be accountable for strategic leadership of a team of safety professionals to support TC Energy's Natural Gas operating assets, and projects. This role requires extensive collaboration across functional boundaries and will be instrumental in shaping the organization's overarching safety culture.
This position is a key member of an integrated North American Safety & Technical Services leadership team working closely with Operations, Engineering, Projects, and other internal and external stakeholders. The role is a key contributor to advance safety maturity, culture, and the prevention of major accidents and serious injuries and is part of multi-disciplinary technical services team advancing safety, integrity, reliability, and cost-effective performance of assets across TC's Energy's pipeline system.
What you'll do
- Provide strategic leadership, direction and coaching to the Process Safety & Services team.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight to Canada, U.S., and Mexico Gas business units related to process safety management, overarching safety strategy, governance, incident management and reporting processes, safety data analytics and performance monitoring, employee and contractor safety programs.
- Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive Process Safety Management (PSM) program across the organization, with a focus on pipeline / large linear operating infrastructure.
- Support the development, implementation, and analysis of health and safety reporting systems; track and communicate safety performance and benchmarking.
- Promote safety goals within all business functions, assist in setting annual safety performance objectives and targets, and integrate safety issues into work management and business planning.
- Develop, grow and implement a network of safety Subject Matter Experts (SME) who will coordinate the development and implementation of safety standards, programs, and business processes.
- Provide technical assistance and expertise during incident investigations, identify root causes monitor follow-up actions, and share learnings with the organization.
- Ensure consistent safety practices across the organization in alignment with strategic objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure policies, procedures, and standards are effectively communicated to employees and contractors, and drive alignment of practice across all areas.
- Ensure emergency management standards and governance is effectively understood and implemented across all business units.
- Establish and execute safety improvement plans and goals in conjunction with key stakeholders to prevent major accidents and serious injuries with the desired culture, actions, and outcomes.
- Provide leadership and direction in the development of Contractor Safety Management and Onboarding Plans across operations and projects.
- Leverage technology to support data driven and risk-based decisions across the business unit.
- Interface with external stakeholders and regulatory bodies as required.
- Resolve conflicting priorities and other team conflicts as required.
- Support TC's safety leadership vision as an active member and contributor to the broader Safety and Technical Services leadership team.
- Take on special projects or assignments as required by the team or assigned by senior leadership.
Minimum Qualifications
- Post-Secondary Education in a related field (Engineering, Science, Occupational Health & Safety, etc.)
- 15+ years progressive experience in relevant roles.
- 5+ years of leadership level experience in safety management in operations, engineering and/or projects.
- Proven track record of building strong teams and a culture of safety, a respectful workplace, and holding people accountable.
- Experience in multiple safety management methodologies, techniques, and processes.
- Experience in the leadership of large linear, multi- jurisdictional operating assets, preferably pipeline, or in other industries such as energy infrastructure (oil & gas, power, petrochemical), transportation and transmission.
- Experience developing and implementing a corporate/enterprise level safety program for use in a multiple asset and multiple jurisdiction context.
- Proven knowledge of process safety risk assessment and management methodologies, management of change processes, etc.
- Strong passion for safety leadership and awareness of management systems and safety related programs.
- Ability to consistently identify opportunities and the initiative and courage to implement improvements.
- Strong negotiation and conflict management skills with multiple stakeholders who have differing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to form effective business relationships including third party engineering, key suppliers, and construction companies.
- Proven leadership track record that engages, motivates, and effectively drives performance of team members, as well as promoting a culture of accountability and respect in the workplace
- Proven knowledge of OSHA standards and Canadian/US/MX safety legislation
- CCPSC, CFSE, CACE, CRSP, CSP certification or other professional designation

- Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings or training (estimated ~ 33% of work schedule)
