We are seeking a highly skilled producer to join our team at CBC News Network Dayside, responsible for creating and editing live breaking news coverage, managing lineups, and working with hosts, writers, and associate producers to ensure high-quality news coverage.
Key Responsibilities:- Create and edit textual and graphical program content, including assigning, researching, gathering, writing, and/or editing.
- Watch live feeds to assess whether events should be broadcast live or not, and when.
- Operate the K5 server, turning around visual elements quickly.
- Prepare lineups and scripts, helping determine the style, pace, tempo, and format of the program.
- Conceive and develop program ideas and concepts, participating in the preparation of program objectives.
- Exercise editorial responsibility as delegated by management, the executive producer, or the senior producer.
- Help determine breaking, live, and continuous news coverage for News Network.
- Manage multiple and often competing priorities.
- Communicate effectively with control room editorial and technical staff, as well as hosts, senior writers, associate producers, contributors, and reporters in the field.
- Ensure that late adjustments made to the program lineup are properly timed and executed.
- Seven years of daily news experience, including experience in developing and producing live breaking news coverage.
- Control room experience is critical, including the ability to interact with other journalists and to convey information to hosts in live, breaking news situations.
- Experience creating and working in automated lineups is also critical.
- University degree or equivalent.
- Candidates must demonstrate superior knowledge of broadcast journalism, and related skills such as writing, vetting, and editing.
- A deep knowledge of iNews Toolbar, VizRT, MediaCentral, and an understanding of automated control room systems, including Ross Overdrive, is crucial.
- Experience operating a K5 (or similar) is essential.
- Highly developed communication skills, able to communicate effectively and cooperatively.
- Highly developed organizational and decision-making skills, including the ability to prioritize, organize, and pay attention to detail in a deadline-driven environment.
- Broad range of interests and knowledge, such as politics, business, science, sports, entertainment, popular culture, technology, and health and medicine.
- Commitment to reflecting community and diversity.
- Must have a thorough understanding of CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices and their practical implementation.
- Must have a thorough understanding of rights issues around third-party material.
