Mental Health Clinician - Pediatric Emergency
Fraser Health is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Mental Health Clinician to join our team in the Pediatric Emergency department. As a key member of our interprofessional care team, you will provide person-centered and recovery-oriented care to pediatric patients and their families.
About the Role:
- Perform intake assessments, offer crisis intervention, and provide input into the care of psychiatric and concurrent disordered pediatric patients in the Emergency Departments.
- Assist with ensuring effective patient flow for assessed pediatric patients through collaboration with Emergency Departments and/or inpatient unit interprofessional team, community mental health and substance use interprofessional team, and other community service providers.
- Assist in care planning to address psychiatric care needs, with final dispositions authorized by the Emergency Room Physicians or consulting Psychiatrist.
Responsibilities:
- Screen psychiatric referrals from internal and external sources, gather background information, and determine service priorities.
- Provide comprehensive mental health/psycho-social assessments to identify client and family social, emotional, and cultural needs to formulate appropriate treatment recommendations.
- Assess the need for psychiatric evaluation and make arrangements for this by utilizing a community psychiatrist available to the program.
- Develop treatment plans and act as case manager by liaising and consulting with community resources.
- Develop care plans with final dispositions authorized by the Emergency Room Physician or consulting psychiatrist and provide general and crisis counseling to patients and their families, including short-term crisis follow-up in accordance with approved treatment plans.
- Communicate and consult with Emergency department staff, other emergency service providers, the interprofessional community mental health and substance use team, and other community service providers on patient care issues, resources, and discharge planning.
- Document assessments, care plan, observations, interventions, patient/family responses, outcomes/evaluations, and referrals according to practice standards and Fraser Health procedures.
Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Social Work, Clinical Counselling, or other relevant health-related discipline.
- Two (2) years' recent related clinical experience in child and adolescent mental health, including assessment, individual, family, and group interventions, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Eligible for registration with relevant professional association.
- Valid BC Driver's License and access to a personal vehicle with appropriate business insurance coverage for work-related purposes.
Skills and Abilities:
- Comprehensive knowledge of community response procedures, mental health assessment, general counselling principles, and intervention techniques.
- Knowledge of Crisis Intervention Theory and demonstrated skill in crisis intervention with children, adolescents, and families.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Systems Theory and an ability to incorporate this into mental health assessments and treatment interventions.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in individual, family, and group interventions.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the developmental stages in the individual and within the family life cycle of psychosocial issues.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the broad range of issues pertaining to child and adolescent mental health problems, including issues related to substance abuse among adolescents and families.
- Knowledge of theory and evidence-based practice related to Developmental Pediatrics; Neuropsychiatric conditions such as complex ADHD, FASD, Pervasive Developmental Disorders; Tourette's Disorder; Seizure Disorders.
- Knowledge and understanding of the diagnostic criteria pertaining to psychiatric diagnoses most prevalent in the child/adolescent population.
- Ability to establish rapport with clients and families to explore issues beyond the initial presenting problems to conduct comprehensive mental health assessments.
- Ability to organize workload and prioritize responsibilities.
- Ability to work effectively with others, both within the hospital and with community agencies utilizing a multi-disciplinary team model.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to operate related equipment, including related software applications.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
