Community Engagement Coordinator
West Fraser is seeking a highly motivated and team-oriented individual to join our North Central Woodlands division as a Community Engagement Coordinator. This exciting opportunity will allow you to lead our consultation and engagement activities with local communities, specifically Indigenous communities.
The North Central Woodlands team is responsible for leading safe, cost-effective, and environmentally sound forestry operations for West Fraser in the Slave Lake and High Prairie regions of Alberta. The team supplies the fibre required for a veneer plant and a lumber mill.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead regional consultation and engagement activities with local communities, including Indigenous communities.
- Coordinate and develop progressive and positive working relationships with communities.
- Administrative lead for the Government of Alberta consultation process with Indigenous communities.
- Facilitate and support the negotiation and implementation of agreements that contribute to effective and durable relationships with communities and Indigenous peoples.
- Engage in effective communication with Indigenous communities regarding divisional forest management and stewardship activities.
- Work with the Alberta Indigenous Relations Lead to develop and implement local community engagement strategies, including economic, employment, and training initiatives.
- Collaborate with Woods staff to ensure commitments made are documented and fulfilled.
- Communicate regularly with corporate and divisional management regarding community engagement activities.
- Coordinate and participate in various community engagement activities and events.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience in a related role.
- Post-secondary education, preferably in forestry, natural resource management, Indigenous relations, or related fields.
- Strong strategic thinking and communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience in community and/or Indigenous engagement or consultation.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience in the drafting of agreements, policies, and procedures.
- Familiarity and good understanding of Indigenous cultures and history within the region.
- Knowledge and understanding of forest management practices and government policies and guidelines related to indigenous consultation and engagement.
- Ability to travel and undertake occasional weekend or evening work as required.
