Job Summary

The Associate Curator of Exhibitions plays a vital role in the curation, development, and implementation of exhibitions in support of the mandate and functions of the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre (IRSHDC). This position is responsible for interpreting research, collections, and educational goals into public-facing digital and physical displays, while prioritizing relationship building, Indigenous data sovereignty, accessibility, and meaningful consultation and collaboration with Indigenous communities, residential school Survivors, Elders, and Indigenous Knowledge holders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Curation and Exhibition Development:
    • Lead the development, interpretation, design, writing, and installation of both digital and physical exhibitions;
    • Collaborate with designers, artists, researchers, and Indigenous community members to coordinate exhibition development;
    • Oversee the design and interpretation of day-to-day layouts and displays in the IRSHDC gallery space;
    • Develop integrated long-term plans for the future development of the IRSHDC gallery space;
    • Write, develop, and design content related to experiences and histories of residential schools in Canada, Indian hospitals in Canada, and/or settler colonialism in Canada;
    • Collaborate with exhibition project partners to develop exhibition themes and content that is responsive, accessible, and respectful to community input and integrates Indigenous storytelling and/or methodologies;
    • Advise and contribute to the drafting of policies related to exhibitions;
    • Provide all necessary curatorial materials for funding requests, reporting, and grant applications.
  • Community Engagement:
    • Build and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, artists, and organizations as relevant to the development of content and materials for exhibitions and programming;
    • Facilitate community consultations and engagement sessions on exhibition concepts and content.
  • Education and Outreach:
    • Collaborate and advise on educational materials, curriculum development, and programming to accompany exhibitions, including guided tours and outreach activities.
Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline;
  • A minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own;
  • Demonstrated commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion;
  • Preferred qualifications include an undergraduate or graduate degree in Indigenous Studies, Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field, as well as deep knowledge and understanding of Indigenous art, design, histories, oral testimonies, and/or histories of residential schools, Indian hospitals, and settler colonialism.
