Position Overview
The Continuing Studies Department at Emily Carr University of Art + Design is on the lookout for skilled interdisciplinary artists and educators to become part of our instructional team.We are particularly focused on recruiting for the Youth Art + Culture Lab initiative, a collaborative effort between Emily Carr University of Art + Design and a local art gallery. This program offers young individuals aged 12-15 the chance to enhance their confidence and cultivate a variety of creative skills through engaging and interactive sessions led by local and international artists, gallery educators, and university instructors. Participants will gain exclusive insights into the artistic process and exhibitions, take part in art-making workshops, explore diverse media, and enrich their appreciation of art.
The ideal candidate must be available for scheduled sessions and participate in preparatory meetings with university and gallery staff. Collaboration on lesson plan development that aligns with current exhibitions is also expected.
This role is offered as a contract for the duration of each scheduled course, with a competitive hourly compensation. We invite applications from individuals whose creative practices emphasize one or more of the following disciplines or techniques: Drawing Painting Illustration (both Traditional and Digital) Animation and Motion Graphics (including 2D, 3D, and Stop Motion) Photography
Required Qualifications We are seeking candidates who possess the following skills and experiences: Expertise in various media, including but not limited to: drawing, painting, illustration, animation, and photography Strong classroom management abilities, incorporating equitable practices, positive disciplinary techniques, empathetic communication, and student-centered learning Excellent teamwork, organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills Experience collaborating with artists, curators, and educators in developing lesson plans and content that align with gallery exhibitions Background in community partnerships with arts organizations
For our Youth + Teen Programs, we are particularly interested in candidates with: Experience engaging with youth and teens from diverse creative, cultural, and educational backgrounds Knowledge of adaptive, accessible, and inclusive instructional methods for enhancing student engagement Familiarity with critique and feedback strategies Experience in developing lesson plans and preparing content for both online and on-campus learning Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud is preferred Teaching experience at secondary and/or post-secondary levels is preferred Familiarity with online education platforms is an asset
For our Adult Programs, we seek candidates with: Experience working with adult learners from diverse creative, cultural, and educational backgrounds Significant knowledge of industry standards and practices, including client relations and collaborative projects Strong organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills Teaching experience at the post-secondary level is preferred Familiarity with online education platforms is an asset Proficiency in Microsoft Office and G-Suite is an asset
Preferred Qualifications Priority will be given to candidates who possess: Canadian citizenship or Permanent Residence status Extensive experience in industry, galleries, or museums, with a desire to share knowledge and expertise Experience working with learners from diverse backgrounds at secondary and post-secondary levels; prior mentorship or training experience is also valued Experience in lesson plan development; prior experience in creating internal training modules or leading workshops is also an asset
For those with limited teaching experience, the Continuing Studies Department offers support through group workshops, standardized resources, and individual consultations to assist in course development and instruction.
