Detailed OverviewThe Practice Leader, Genetic Counselling is responsible for the planning, implementation and delivery of Genetic Counselling clinical and academic services consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic directions of Fraser Health. The Practice Leader supervises designated staff and students including coordinating work assignments, participating in the hiring and discipline process, approving leaves and overtime, and acts as a resource. Additionally, the Practice Leader develops and maintains Genetic Counselling goals, objectives, policies, procedures and standards, oversees the quality improvement program and participates in the administration of the operational and capital budgets. The Practice Leader supports the Manager in decision-making processes surrounding care delivery, clinical competencies, clinical practice, and standards of care. The Practice Leader also performs Genetic Counsellor functions and carries a clinical case load as required.
Responsibilities- Ensures professional association standards, certification requirements, practice guidelines, and the code of ethics for genetic counselling are understood, monitored and maintained.
- Identifies profession specific performance evaluation standards and processes. In collaboration with Program Leaders provides input to professional competency development and evaluation of staff performance appraisal. Develops strategies to address and remediate performance issues if required.
- In consultation with the Provincial Medical Genetics Program (PMGP), and in collaboration with Program Leaders, participates in the planning and coordination of service delivery, including the development of practice guidelines, goals, objectives and interprofessional clinical pathways using evidence-based practice.
- Ensures that clinical supervision to staff is provided as required and to meet collective agreement requirements and acts a mentor, along with others, to Genetic Counsellors. Ensures that a process and mechanisms are in place for ongoing clinical and peer consultation (i.e. practice councils, mentors, etc).
- Maintains and updates knowledge by methods such as reviewing relevant literature, evaluating clinical practice and together with education resources, develops processes for defining and implementing practice skills for Genetic Counselling and supports the utilization of their full scope of practice.
- Provides consultative services to medical and other professional groups, or identifies a resource to do so, on Genetic Counselling related issues. Acts as a clinical resource contact person to Genetic Counsellors, the agency, the academic and university environment, other health care facilities and community services.
- Addresses the training and orientation needs of staff and students by methods such as arranging and/or participating in staff education; identifying and recommending training/skill enhancement for staff; conducting needs assessments and coordinating the introduction of new skills/procedures; ensuring necessary resources are available or accessible; and delivering related training and orientation content to ensure effective patient centered care.
- Establishes and maintains relationships with relevant educational institutions and ensures the coordination of clinical teaching and student and/or intern practicum experience, including student placements, learning activities, orientation, and evaluation.
- Ensures Genetic Counselling participation in interprofessional research and education activities, by contributing to research activities involving Genetic Counselling and services, and acting as a liaison between the research coordination resource and the discipline.
- In conjunction with Professional Practice and operational leadership facilitates and participates in the development of the quality improvement and risk management programs through upgrading and maintaining policies, procedures and clinical guidelines.
- Represents or facilitates the representation of Genetic Counselling regionally, provincially and nationally. Advises the organization in regards to discipline trends/issues impacting programs and/or organizational directions and goals. Ensures Genetic Counsellor participation in advisory groups, committees, planning groups, both internally and externally, to provide input and/or receive information and participate in decision-making.
- Works in conjunction with Program Leaders and others to identify staff requirements, develop position descriptions and performs first stage screening to determine and evaluate professional competencies and qualifications.
- Participates in the development, modification, implementation and monitoring of the workload measurement system to meet internal and external reporting requirements and to assist with resource allocation and clinical prioritization. Maintains a variety of other records as required.
- Assumes a Genetic Counsellor case load as required; performing Genetic Counselling duties such as assessing history, planning, implementing and evaluating support and testing options for assigned patients.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience
Master's degree in Genetic Counselling or Medical Genetics. Six (6) years of recent, related experience including two (2) years leadership experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Current certification with the Canadian Board of Genetic Counselling and/or American Board of Genetic Counselling.
