Water/Waste Water Operator

Fulltime/Permanent

The District of Fort St. James is located on the south shore of Stuart Lake in central British Columbia, Fort St. James is a municipality of 1400 residents and occupies lands that have been home of the Nak'azdli Whut'en people since time immemorial. The community is defined by the welcoming character and fun spirit of the people who live here as well as the beauty of the surrounding waters landscapes, and natural environments.

The District is seeking applications for the position of Water/Wastewater Operator

The Water/Wastewater Operator is responsible for efficient operation and maintenance of the water and wastewater infrastructure.

The Water/Wastewater Operator will report directly to the Foreman and the Director of Operations, or their delegate.

Water/Wastewater Operator Responsibilities:

Water Quality SamplingWastewater and storm effluent samplingMaintenance and repair to water, wastewater, and storm infrastructureConfined space entryRespond and investigate sewer backups and storm floodingVisual inspection of sanitary, storm manhole and valve chambersRestoration activites; sodding, concrete, interlock and asphalt placementTraffic control and signage set upSanitary sewer flushingSupervise contractor during infrastructure repairsInteracting with EMS, YRPH, MOL, Council and members of the publicWater main flushingFire flow testingPerform utility (water, wastewater, storm) locatesHydrant meter service and installationCustomer Service water off/on, water quality complaintsPerform regulatory sampling for lead, THM's, Nitrates and Chlorine residualUV system inspectionPerform inspection of PRV, drain and air valvesCamera inspections of wastewater and storm infrastructureInspection and maintenance of lift stationsCross connection investigation and remediationProvide spill response and cleanup; interact with MOECC and SACOperate heavy equipment (eg Dump truck, loader, flusher, backhoe, compressor, etc.)Associated responsibilities include:Small work crew oversightMaintain and complete legible recordsInvestigate and assist with follow-ups to enquires from the publicAll duties must be performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Safe Drinking Water Act and associated regulations, District Policies, procedures and practicesAvailable for Standby and shift workMaintain all certifications needed for compliance in the Province of British Columbia Water actsPerform other duties as assigned
The successful candidate must have;Highschool Diploma or equivalentWater distribution Subsystem Class 2 Wastewater Collection Class 2 and Wastewater Treatment Level 2Supply a current and satisfactory Criminal Record CheckPossess a Class 5 BC Driver's License with Air Brakes EndorsementClean Drivers AbstractCurrently hold Occupational First Aid (Level 1), CPR and AED trainingExperience in water distribution, wastewater collection systems and sanitary pump station maintenanceAbility to prepare and keep records, read and interpret engineered drawingsGeneral knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and sewer use by-lawsAble to perform the physical demands of this position under adverse weather and site conditions, including confined space entryAbility to work overtime and meet the mandatory requirements of "standby" in accordance with the provisions of the CUPE Local 4951 Collective AgreementDemonstrate good judgement and make sound decisionsCommitted to personal growth, development, and leadership opportunitiesVerbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with honesty, openness, respect, and trustTakes initiative to participate in culture learning, mentoring, and sharing

    Work hours will follow the Public Works Operational hours 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week, Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. It may be requested, from time to time, that you work outside of the Public Works Operational hours. The wages will be subject to the District's collective agreement with CUPE 4951. The hourly rate for this position is $41.83 per hour.
