Position Description

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Acute Mental Health Unit (T9) is a 30- bed inpatient unit located at the Charlton Campus.

It is one of four Acute Mental Health Units at SJHH providing interdisciplinary assessment, treatment, stabilization and discharge planning for adults with acute mental health mental health illness who may also have complex medical, psychological and social needs.

The Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) is co-located with the Charlton Campus Emergency Department.

The PES team work to provide compassionate care that respects the dignity and privacy of all persons requiring emergency psychiatric assessment and intervention.

PES provides care by clinicians and psychiatrists who assess and treat over 3000 persons annually with acute mental health problems who have presented to the Emergency Department at SJHH.

The Clinical Manager will be an integral part of the upcoming planned PES redevelopment, which will lead to increased services and capacity to better serve the mental health needs in our community.

Both 9T and PES provide training for many students in the health care profession and work in partnership with other inpatient and outpatient mental health services to assist individuals in finding the right level of care.


The Clinical Manager is an innovative and self-directed, results-oriented professional who demonstrates a creative and collaborative management style and provides leadership to assigned area(s) of responsibility.

The Clinical Manager is accountable to the Clinical Director and is responsible for Psychiatry Emergency Services (PES), Acute Inpatient Unit T9 and any rotational Mental Health Patient Flow Responsibilities.

The Clinical Manager is accountable for the hiring and effective management of all direct report staff and for financially managing the cost centres for assigned units.

In collaboration with the Nurse Educator and other Professional Practice Leads, the Clinical Manager facilitates educational activities on the unit(s).

This position is also responsible for the coordination of activities to ensure smooth patient flow, management through Psychiatric Emergency Services, and the acute inpatient unit.

The position works with services and departments to optimize the patient experience and care. The position also works to ensure patient engagement in process improvements for PES and the inpatient unit(s).

This position requires knowledge of mental health diagnosis and current treatment modalities, including knowledge of serious mental illness and community service options/resources available in the community.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate degree in health related discipline required
  • Masters' Degree in Health Administration or other health related field preferred
  • Current registration in a regulated health care profession required
  • Canadian Nurses Association Certification in Mental Health preferred
  • Professional membership preferred
  • 3 to 5 years of recent clinical and management leadership experience required
  • Recent experience working with electronic medical records preferred
  • Intermediate knowledge and use of Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Visio required.
  • Is clinically knowledgeable about disease entities; about epidemiological issues and about circumstances that may impact where a patient can be placed.
  • Demonstrates enhanced knowledge and expertise in interpersonal communication, coaching, negotiating, mentoring and team building skills that facilitate positive interactions among all members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of the application of the RHPA legislation, Regulatory Standards of Practice.
  • Possesses highly developed analytical, problem solving, critical thinking skills.
  • Possesses the ability to introduce and effectively facilitate change.
  • Demonstrates a strong patient and customer focused philosophy in all interactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, support and critical analysis in stressful, complex clinical and emotional situations.
  • Ability to analyze research and incorporate evidence based practice into Policy and Procedures development to inform clinical practice.
  • Enhanced knowledge and expertise in coaching, facilitation, listening, group and team skills.
  • Experience with electronic health record preferred

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops, implements and evaluates staff education and training programs in collaboration with the nurse educator and professional practice leads
  • Contributes to education and professional development of staff, students, and colleagues in an environment of mutual respect and understanding.
  • Fosters effective employee and labour relations through knowledgeable interpretation and implementation of hospital policies and collective agreements.
(ONA, CUPE, OPSEU).

  • Engages in review of complaints/compliments for assigned areas including investigation and resolution of same.
  • Collaborates in the design and implementation of methods and techniques to continuously improve the delivery of service and ensure excellence in patient care.
  • Participates and collaborates with interdisciplinary daily rounds with a focus on delivering patient centered care, facilitation and monitoring of appropriate discharge planning and patient flow.
  • Performs corporate and program management responsibilities that support and advance SJHH goals such as: contribute to corporate efforts and initiatives, as appropriate, to enhance SJHH's mission, values, and goals; represents the program internally on SJHH committees, as required, and SJHH in the external community at conferences, workshops and committee work.
  • Participates in corporate level process improvement projects to improve overall hospital efficiency and effectiveness.
With specific experience in Lean, will assist others in the organization to lead Process improvement projects.

  • Develops collection methods and provides clinical data analysis on service utilization for inpatient acute areas which is used to measure performance of program in achieving corporate and program strategic goals.
This includes report writing for various levels of the organization such as, executive team members, program managers, and front-line staff.
