Job Overview

Komatsu, a leading provider of innovative solutions for the construction, mining, and industrial sectors, is seeking a skilled Mechanical Designer to join its Hard Rock Drilling Product Engineering team. As a key member of this team, you will be responsible for designing and developing new and innovative products to solve complex problems faced by customers in the mining industry.

This role will primarily focus on designing drilling and bolting attachments to be fitted onto the booms of Komatsu underground jumbo drills and bolters. You will utilize computer-aided design (CAD) software, specifically SolidWorks, to create 3D drawings and schematics of parts, assemblies, and technical renderings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop drilling and bolting attachments for underground jumbo drills and bolters.
  • Create detailed drawings and schematics of parts, assemblies, and technical renderings using CAD software.
  • Develop drawings from notes, sketches, existing drawings, design concepts, verbal instruction, and/or engineering specifications.
  • Document updates to designs and ensure that any changes are recorded and prepared in accordance with engineering change procedures.
  • Provide continuous support to the production team during the assembly phase of capital equipment builds.
  • Carry out inspections, measurements, field tests, and other evaluations to identify design issues and create scopes of work to address these issues and continuously improve the design.
Requirements
  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of experience in design of underground hard rock equipment desired.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design standards, techniques, methods, and architecture.
  • Experience in weldment design and stress analysis.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Software and ERP systems (SAP considered an asset).
  • Experience with project management methodologies and software.
  • Fully competent with 3D CAD design, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles, design standards, and EHS regulations.
  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes (in particular welding and machining).
  • Understanding of Bill of Materials and MRP systems (ECN's/NCR's).
  • Solid problem-solving skills, including the ability to conduct investigations, perform calculations, and run tests.
  • High level of initiative with the ability to work independently and as part of a broader team.
  • Knowledge of fluid mechanics and electrics.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with a focus on accuracy and quality.
