Reporting to the Manager of Strategic Research Partnerships, the Strategic Research Partnerships Specialist will support the development of business and innovation cases for targeted research initiatives. This individual will contribute to developing viable economic and business models for new partnered-research initiatives at UHN; translate insights, opportunities and business objectives for targeted research initiatives into strategies and actionable plans; and conduct overall project risk analyses for these new initiatives, outlining major potential barriers and proposed strategies to mitigate them. The Specialist, Strategic Partnerships will work alongside other team members and stakeholders to build a strong multi-sector research network with critical internal and external partners to facilitate the alignment and integration of emerging ideas, and to catalyze new research initiatives.

Duties

  • Supports the development of economic models and business development of new research programs/centres/institutes
  • Participates in the initial assessment of business ideas/pitches brought forward by researchers and leadership regarding new research initiatives, including but not limited to new research institutes, programs and centres.
  • Under the guidance of the Manager, Strategic Research Partnerships, this individual determines if the basis of a sound economic and business venture is present and provides recommendations regarding resource investment.
  • Leverages institutional and research expertise to assist with developing business and economic plans with key partners, ensuring alignment with UHN's strategic priorities, current research trends and overall resource strategy. Supports the creation of budgets, pitch decks and other materials, as needed.
  • Works with internal and external stakeholders to assist with the implementation and operationalization of new research initiatives, ensuring a smooth transition from proposal development to agreement signing to launch.
  • Develops overall project risk analyses for new initiatives, outlining major potential barriers that constitute threats to project success and proposing mitigation strategies.
  • Translates insights, opportunities and business objectives into strategies and actionable plans for targeted research initiatives.
  • Develops strategic business plans partnered initiatives with industry and non-profit organizations in collaboration with the Research Solutions & Services (RSS) teams, UHN International, principal investigators and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with Research Solutions and Services (RSS) teams, including Research Legal, UHN Commercialization Office and others and leadership to support the negotiation of donor contracts and agreements
  • Assists with the negotiation of research contracts and agreements, including publication rights, intellectual property rights, liability, insurance and indemnification provisions, etc. on behalf of UHN where relevant.
  • Fosters an efficient, focused and positive collaborative culture among teams and partners involved in negotiations and collaborations.
  • Develops strong and productive relationships with stakeholders across UHN, including but not limited to researchers, clinicians, research administration, and research and hospital leadership.
Qualifications
  • At minimum, completion of a master's degree in a biomedical science or recognized equivalent
  • At minimum, over 1 year up to and including 2 years practical and related experience and/or 2 years on-the-job training required.
  • Strong understanding of biomedical research environment; business and financial acumen preferred.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and communication (oral and written) skills are essential.
  • Experience working in a hospital/research environment required.
  • Experience working in a business or science related industry preferred.
  • Experience in negotiating, drafting and reviewing business documents preferred.
  • Experience in economic modelling preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and verbal communication skills required.
  • MBA or business degree/experience is an asset but not absolutely required.
