We are hiring for a 1 year full-time maternity leave term until October 1, 2025.

Position Summary and Scope of Service:

Jordan’s Principle is a child first and needs based principle that applies equally to all First Nations children residing on and off reserve. It ensures there is no denial or delay for First Nations Children in receiving essential public services that are available to all other children. St.Amant embraces the goal of Jordan’s Principle to ensure that all children with disabilities have access to the health and social services they need in their community. We are currently recruiting a Nurse Consultant for a 1 year term to support this initiative.

This position is based in Winnipeg with regular travel by car, plane or boat to indigenous communities throughout Manitoba. Nurse Consultants working with the Jordan’s Principle program are required to travel to various locations across Manitoba. Some of these locations are in remote communities. If staying overnight in a remote community is required, Clinicians would be eligible for travel incentives.

Our Community Nursing Services provides nursing consultation along with limited direct nursing services to clients referred to St.Amant Clinical Services when appropriate. Nurse Consultants also play an active role in health education, assessment of health needs and supports in a community setting, delegation of medical based tasks, and identify ways to improve health care navigation. Nurse Consultants support care teams at each site or in a specific community for programs who fund Community Nursing Services directly.

Qualifications:

Educational:

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing required from an accredited faculty of nursing
  • Current C.P.R. skills at Basic Rescuer Level (BLS required)
  • Course work/certification in adult education is an asset
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention is an asset

Professional:

  • Must be registered or eligible for registration with either the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM)
  • Active participation with Association of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM)
  • Minimum of five years current nursing experience
  • Minimum of two years’ community nursing experience
  • Minimum 2 years in a formal supervisory or teaching role required

Clinical:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing theory and practice relevant to the care of persons with a developmental disability
  • Knowledgeable of the history of services to people with disabilities and current trends, philosophies and practices concerning their care, education and lifestyles
  • Understands and supports the concept of interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Excellent written and verbal skill
  • Experience with staff training and familiarity with adult learning concepts and training techniques would be an asset
  • Experience in adult education is an asset
  • Competency in applicable digital technology application and in Microsoft Office, including Word and Power Point and/or other presentation software required
  • Familiarity with online learning modalities is an asset
  • Experience in working with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities/dual diagnosis, living within a community setting is an asset
  • Knowledge of quality assurance practices is an asset

Personal:

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision as well as a collaborative team player in a team environment
  • Able to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Flexible and able to work within a non-conventional schedule in accord with regulations specified within the MNU collective agreement
  • Valid Manitoba Driver’s License
  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle

Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical Care Management:

Consistent with the Mission and Philosophy of the St.Amant, the Nurse Consultant is responsible for overseeing the provision of services within their area of clinical practice and ensuring adherence to St.Amant and Program policies and the requirements of their professional regulatory body.

Duties include:

  • Becomes familiar with each client’s health history and assesses current health status
  • Develops a health care plan for each client referred as required
  • Provides leadership and consultation during and/or following a medical emergency
  • Evaluates responses to medical interventions
  • Works closely with the Managers/Coordinators of the program to assess training needs of direct care staff
  • When appropriate, participates in Individual Planning Meetings and providing consultation related to the development of Individual Support Plans
  • Identifies trends in health needs of community residence clients and relays this to Manager, Community Nursing Services
  • Promotes health and prevention of illness through sharing of information with the community specific program leadership
  • Monitors whether health resources in the community are responsive and relevant to needs of clients
  • Audits residences to ensure health care management standards are maintained
  • Develops and implements an efficient training package for clients and their care providers with regard to general as well as specific health issues
  • Provides consultation and supports coordination of services to address health problems that have not been resolved by standard measures or that are complex in nature
  • Communicates effectively with client’s substitute decision maker and other service providers as necessary and as requested by the program leadership
  • Provides recommendations for required medical follow-up to health related incidents reported by the program staff
  • Coordinates health assessment and history for clients referred for such service
  • Develops nursing objectives/focus statements for clients within the Community Living Stabilization Service/Acquired Brain Injury program as part of their overall treatment plan
  • Supervises the implementation of objectives and treatment plans
