The Recreational Specialist will work as a team member to create and support recreational activities for men living within our homeless shelter. This position reports to the Program Director to ensure that all activities are appropriate and meet the needs of the clients. Proof of COVID-19 vaccinations is required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Works as a team member to provide academic, recreational, and social skills programming to the men in the shelter.
  2. Creates a group environment that promotes and expects positive behavioral norms. Helps create a safe-haven for youth living within the homeless shelter setting.
  3. Develops and implements age-appropriate activities and programs.
  4. Documents monthly participation and outcomes; analyzes results and prepares recommendations.
  5. Participates in initial training, ongoing staff development, and supervision.
  6. Maintains proper safety standards regarding the health of participants in all programs.
  7. Ensures that the recreational space is clean and well maintained.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. High School Diploma/GED required, College degree preferred.
  2. Previous experience working with children and/or young adults is essential.
  3. Experience working with low-income populations preferred.
  4. Must enjoy the challenges involved with working with youth who may present a number of academic and social deficits.
  5. An upbeat, engaging personality is desirable.
  6. Program hours include afternoons, evenings, some weekends, and holidays.
  7. Must be computer savvy.
  8. A clean/valid NYS Driver’s License is required.
  9. Must be able to pass child abuse screening and criminal background check.
