The Park Ranger shares a commitment to community and enhancing the park experience for over 200 park facilities, which offer residents and visitor's recreational opportunities that include picnic areas, sports fields, bike and hiking pathways, beaches and nature preserves.
Working in collaboration with other City of Vancouver and Park Board departments, stakeholders, volunteers, park watch programs and the public the Park Rangers are involved in public relations, park patrol and routine regulatory enforcement work.
Monitor permitted activities including large special events, sports field use, picnics, weddings, and commercial recreation.Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses in bylaw enforcement or related training and experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Valid Standard First Aid Certificate with CPR-C and AED is required.
- Valid Security license and/or security experience is considered an asset.
- Understanding of the Powers of Arrest under the Criminal Code, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and Mental Health First Aid Training are considered an asset.
- Experience with writing professional reports
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Sound knowledge of the operations, rules, bylaws and regulations governing the work performed.
- Sound knowledge of assigned park areas and facilities and hazards found therein.
- Working knowledge of the procedures for bylaw enforcement.
- Some knowledge of natural history and ecology of assigned area.
- Some knowledge of first aid, fire watch, animal control and traffic control practices and procedures.
- Excellent conflict resolution skills are essential
- Excellent attention to detail, written and verbal communication, decision making and public relations skills
- Ability to make decisions and use independent judgment
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
- Ability to provide advice, assistance, information and direction to a variety of park users in a concise, courteous and tactful manner in sometimes difficult circumstances.
- Ability to enforce rules and regulations.
- Ability to perform basic first aid.
- Ability to walk and/or ride a bicycle long distances and work under varying weather conditions.
- Ability and alertness in detecting unusual situations and skill in handling same.
- Ability to keep routine records and act as a witness and conduct cases before a Justice of the Peace.
- Ability to perform routine repair and maintenance tasks related to park operations.
Driver's License and Record Checks:
- A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver's License or higher with a satisfactory driving record is required.
- The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities.
- A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.
The City's COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time.
However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
