Role Responsibilities:

  • The Board Secretary manages the operations of the offices of the Environmental Appeals Board and Public Land Appeal Board, serves as the executive secretary to the Boards and acts as the representative in contacts with the public, industry, media, and others. It is the responsibility of the Board Secretary to obtain the maximum benefit from the involvement of the parttime Board members who serve on these quasijudicial administrative tribunals which hears appeals of decisions made by officials of Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and Alberta Forestry and Parks. The Board Secretary is responsible to the Chairs of the Environmental Appeals Board and Public Lands Appeal Board.
  • The Board Secretary is the Chief Administrative Officer for the Environmental Appeal Board and the Public Lands Appeal Board, and as such is responsible for directing the financial, administrative, and operational affairs of the Board. The Board Secretary is also responsible for identifying, analyzing, recommending, and implementing new and improved systems or policies to enhance the operations of the Environmental Appeal Board and Public Lands Appeal Board to ensure appeals are dealt with in a fair, effective, and timely manner.
  • The Board Secretary is the link between the Boards and the Department in relation to corporate, financial, and administrative matters.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Preparing budgets and financial reports and undertaking monthly tracking of all expenditures for review by the Chairs, ensuring the budget is properly managed within government guidelines.
  • Ensuring access to all appeals by posting information on the Board's website and maintaining comprehensive viewing files.
  • Serving as Board spokesperson and communicator with the public, providing written and verbal communications with all parties, ensuring news releases are composed, responding to public and media inquiries.
  • Supports the Board's General Counsel, who is the Executive Director for the Boards.
  • Others as required.

Qualifications:

  • University graduation in Law, Public Administration or a related field, supplemented by six years progressively responsible experience. Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.
  • Equivalencies will be considered.

  • Leadership and Supervisory experience.
  • Experience in advanced verbal and written communication.
  • Expert knowledge of the Boards legislation, regulations, rules of practice, and administrative procedures; organization, personnel and procedures; and environmental and industry organizations and the issues surrounding them.
