Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Education & Outreach the Indigenous Education Coordinator is responsible for the development and delivery of informative and culturally appropriate educational programs and exhibits related to the Indigenous heritage of Conservation Halton parks. This includes the following responsibilities and areas of focus.

  • Foster partnerships with Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, Elders, artists, educators, and Indigenous Partners Council to inform the work and assist with creating an inclusive educational experience for park guests of all ages.
  • Develop and implement general interest and curriculum based educational programs related to the Indigenous heritage of Crawford Lake Conservation Area and contributing to the planning and implementation of other relevant Conservation Halton programs
  • Assist Conservation Halton parks to actively and respectfully honour the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Calls for Justice of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
  • Develop implement and maintain educational exhibits, signage, and program materials related to the Longhouse Village and associated gardens at Crawford Lake Conservation Area
  • Develop and implement educational special events at Crawford Lake Conservation Area and contribute to the planning and implementation of other relevant Conservation Halton special events
  • Foster a culture of ecological literacy through the incorporation of Traditional Ecological Knowledge in Conservation Halton educational programming and events
  • Assist with hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating seasonal, part-time & volunteer programming staff to ensure Indigenous programming is respectfully and accurately developed and presented
Your Qualifications
  • Cultural/lived experience as an Indigenous person
  • Bachelor's degree in Indigenous Studies, Education, Anthropology, Archaeology, Museum or Environmental Studies
  • 4-5 years' experience designing and implementing educational programming
  • 3-5 years' leadership/supervisory experience
  • 1-2 years' experience building relationships with Indigenous communities, Knowledge Keepers, Elders, Artists, and Educators
  • High literacy of Indigenous culture(s), particularly Wendat or Haudenosaunee cultures, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge or local ecology
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Treaties relevant to Conservation Halton Parks and Watershed an asset
  • Knowledge of relevant government policies related to archaeological sites and artefact handling an asset
  • Experience working with the Ontario Ministry of Education approved curriculum/curriculum design.
  • Ontario College of Teachers certification an asset
  • French or Indigenous second language an asset
  • Fluent in Microsoft Office Applications, (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, MS Teams, etc.)
  • Fluent in Google Platform Applications, (Drive, Docs, Slides, Meet, etc.)
  • Comfort level presenting via online platforms (Zoom)
  • Experience with the Adobe suite of products or developing media such as videos and digital presentations an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • First Aid certification is an asset
