Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Information Technology and Innovation Foundation Full time

Policy Analyst, Technology (ITIF-Canada)

The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF)—the world's leading think tank for science and technology policy—seeks a policy analyst to focus on technology and industrial policy issues in Canada.

The ideal applicant should not only be an excellent researcher who can quickly produce high-quality written reports and articles but also an engaging public speaker and social media pundit who is committed to advancing digital innovation to spur economic growth and improve quality of life.

The applicant should have a deep understanding of the existing tech policy debates, including issues such as artificial intelligence, data protection, content moderation, platform regulation, and cybersecurity, and be willing to use evidence and logic to challenge conventional wisdom when appropriate.

ITIF brings an unapologetically pro-innovation perspective to tech and industrial policy.

This position will be based in Ottawa and will be hired on a renewable one-year term.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Write reports, blog posts, opeds, and responses to consultations on relevant digital policy issues.
  • Organize, host, and speak at conferences, panel discussions, debates, and other policy events.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders involved in technology and industrial policy, including Canadian parliamentarians, cabinet officials, thought leaders, media, and other key influencers.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience and interest in technology/industry policy.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Superior communication skills, both oral and written, including an ability to write clear, succinct, and persuasive research papers, opeds, and blog posts.
  • A successful track record analyzing technology policy issues and educating policymakers about the impact of legislative or regulatory proposals.
  • Highly proactive, independent, and flexible, with an ability to work on multiple projects in a fastpaced environment.
  • Ability to network and build relationships with outside organizations.

Application process:

  • Resume (2 pages, max)
  • Cover letter stating your specific interest and qualifications for the position (1 page, max)
  • Writing sample, preferably on a topic related to technology or industry policy (3 pages max)
Applications will be considered until the position is filled.

About ITIF-Canada
The Canadian economy is increasingly based on innovation, technology, skills and knowledge, and flexibility and dynamism.

Enhancing economic opportunity for Canadians over the next several decades will depend in large part on the extent to which policymakers understand the nature and workings of this new innovation economy.

Yet the contours of the Canadian innovation economy have been inadequately explored by researchers and even less well understood by policymakers and other government officials.

As a result, the mission of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation-Canada (ITIF-Canada) is to help policymakers and the public better understand the nature of the innovation economy and the types of public policies needed to drive Canadian innovation, productivity, and broad-based prosperity.

ITIF-Canada is a new non-profit, public policy research organization, based in Ottawa, focused on Canadian technology innovation, competitiveness, and productivity, as well as related policy issues.

It will conduct research and analysis of these and related questions as they affect the Canadian economy. It will publish research reports, blogs, and op-eds. In addition, it will convene public and private meetings to present its findings and research.

The goal of ITIF-Canada is four-fold: 1) build on current ITIF research capabilities to more effectively analyze Canada's advanced industry economy; 2) weigh in and comment on key Canadian tech policy issues through briefings, public events, op-eds, and short, policy-relevant reports; 3) offer recommendations for new or reformed Canadian tech policies and programs; and 4) serve as a bridge between Canadian and U.S. tech policymakers.
