The bilingual Public Relations and Communication Officer plans, develops and delivers field unit public relations and communications products and activities to engage the public, partners and stakeholders in the understanding, appreciation and support of the natural and cultural heritage of the national parks, national historic sites and national marine park in Eastern and Central Ontario. They also provide professional support in areas such as writing and editing; translation; communications planning and strategy; media relations; social media and web content development; event planning and co-ordination; and stakeholder relations and engagement.

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and preservation of Canada's outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada. Parks Canada's Eastern and Central Ontario Field unit (ECOFU) spans southern Ontario from the shores of Lake Huron to the Quebec-Ontario border along the St. Lawrence River. The ECOFU is home to three national parks, one national marine conservation area, and fifteen national historic sites.

The incumbent to this position will work for the ECOFU's External Relations team to support the national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation area located in this region. The incumbent will work in person and virtually with colleagues in an inter-disciplinary team located across the ECOFU.

EDUCATION:

• Graduation with a degree from a recognized college or university with specialization in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism or other discipline relevant to the position or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience

EXPERIENCE:

• Experience writing and editing bilingual communications products such as news releases, media lines,
speaking points, speeches, social media and web content, and analytical background material;

• Experience providing strategic and operational communications and media relations advice to
management;

• Experience researching, analyzing, developing and delivering strategies and plans related to
communication and media relations;

• Experience in working with and developing relationships with media in Canada;

• Experience planning and organizing special events such as news conferences, government
announcements and media briefings.

KNOWLEDGE:

• Knowledge of the news media in Canada;

• Knowledge of a broad spectrum of communication media tools and techniques including planning and
delivery;

• Knowledge of external issues and trends that have an impact on external relations; and

• Knowledge of Parks Canada, its mandate, corporate orientation, objectives and programs.

ABILITIES:

• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

• Ability to analyze documents/reports, assess the communications implications and make
recommendations;

• Ability to manage conflicting priorities, to multi-task and to work under time-sensitive conditions;

• Ability to draft communications materials and coordinate approvals;

• Ability to plan and organize the logistics associated with special events, such as news conferences,
press briefings, Ministerial and/or other VIP events;

• Ability to deliver products, services and advice in communications, particularly in media relations,
high-visibility issues and web-based communications.

transportation;

• Willingness to work from various locations;

• Willingness to travel extensively, including overnight, off site and/or weekends.
