Your Opportunity:


The Speech Language Pathologist II provides coordination of speech and language services within Rehabilitation Oncology at the Cross Cancer Institute within Cancer Care Alberta.

The Speech Language Pathology (SLP) provides comprehensive assessment, treatment and management services to adults with oral and/or pharyngeal swallowing disorders and associated feeding disorders, related to their cancer or cancer treatment within the inpatient and ambulatory outpatient environments.

Provide patients with quality SLP patient care services, including assessment, planning, and implementing treatment for a wide range of swallowing, speech, language and voice disorders arising because of numerous types of cancer or cancer treatments.

Provide specialized SLP patient care services, as required, from the identified areas of specialization - but not limited to, swallowing and communication disorders occurring in patients with head and neck cancers, central nervous system cancers.

Provide rehabilitation assessment and treatment modalities where required, including but not limited to, digital fluoroscopic swallowing (modified barium swallow) assessments, augmentative and alternative communication devices.

Assist cancer-related symptom control, in collaboration and consultation with other members of the inter-disciplinary health care team. Provide appropriate documentation of assessment, patient goals and treatment plan, interventions, and outcomes. Responsible for administrative duties such as referral management as well as assigned by the Manager.

As a Speech Language Pathologist, you will provide clinical professional practice both independently and as a part of a collaborative team, which may include external partners.

You will be responsible for providing prevention, health promotion, identification, assessment, intervention, and case management.

You will participate in the planning, coordination and delivery of rehabilitation services in collaboration with patients/clients, families, healthcare professionals and other partners.

Your leadership and interpersonal skills will aid you in supervising students and providing clinical guidance to other staff as appropriate.

You will use your clinical expertise to inform ongoing quality improvement, service integration, and program development.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Active or eligible registration and practice permit with the Alberta College of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists (ACSLPA).

Additional Required Qualifications:


Minimum 3 year's clinical experience in adult inpatient or outpatient acute care or rehabilitation area, (e.g., neurology, orthopedics, medicine, geriatrics, palliative care and home care).

BCLS/CPR certification. It's Your Move Patient Handling annual certification. MBSImp certified

  • VFSS standardized course. Previous experience in the past 12 months with triage and caseload management. Professional development within the past 12 months related to oncologic services, e.g. Head and Neck cancer management, speech and language assessment/management, and/or management of dysphagia. Ability to complete videofluroscopic studies (VFSS) independently. Experience in providing SLP in an interdisciplinary team is essential. Proficiency in Microsoft office programs and Epic/connect care EMR. Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and decisionmaking skills, in a complex and everchanging environment. A high level of physical effort may be required related to clinical caseload, including heavy lifting at times related to moving equipment and patients. Must have a good understanding of appropriate body mechanics and Its Your Move Patient Handling techniques and policies and be required to transfer/assist with lifting adults and/or children including bariatric patients. May be required to sit for prolonged periods and perform keyboarding/computer and headset use.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum 5 year's clinical experience in an adult inpatient or outpatient acute care or rehabilitation area.

Minimum 2-3 years, oncology experience, specifically pain and symptom control, head and neck cancers, cancers of central nervous system, and lymphedema management.

Interpret VFSS using TIMS DICOM software (swallowing station). Experience in using virtual technology to support patient care.
