Publishing/Technical Support Specialist:
The Publishing/Technical Support Specialist reports to the Managing Editor of Hansard in the House Publications and Language Services Branch of the Legislative Services Division.
The position designs programs to automate processes and support the achievement of production goals; initiates and supports systems-related projects and provides technical training and detailed systems documentation; prepares the official report of the debates of the Legislative Assembly and related proceedings for timely publication; and provides technical support to Hansard staff to resolve or escalate issues.
What You'll Do:
You'll act with integrity to:
- Work within strict production deadlines and to high standards for House, committee, and nonlegislative publications to: prepare, compile, format and update master documents and print page proofs for final editing; accurately and quickly incorporate editors' final corrections into master documents; convert all Hansard reports to appropriate electronic formats and publish to the website; insert and verify hypertext links between HTML files where required; ensure files conform to digital prepress standards and transmit printready PDFs to external vendor, if required, resolving any technical difficulties or arranging alternative method of delivery when necessary; ensure that all Hansard publications meet AODA standards.
- Maintain familiarity with Assembly web standards and web technology/features; gather and analyze requirements, create, and implement test plans, and develop and implement useracceptance testing; investigate and assist in implementing new technologies and processes to improve operational efficiencies; design, develop, engineer, and maintain production automation systems.
You'll support our collaboration as you:
- Act as the point-person for technical matters affecting editorial production for Hansard and/or technical issues affecting other areas of the branch.
- Work directly with vendors, as required, when troubleshooting issues, documenting and communicating updates and changes with internal stakeholders
- Participate in team meetings and projects, providing consultative and technical support.
How You Qualify:
You demonstrate excellence through your:
- Thorough understanding of word processing, publishing and print production techniques, practices, and principles.
- Advanced technical knowledge of desktop and web publishing software (e.g., HTML Transit and Adobe Acrobat), Windows and Microsoft Office; Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and ability to create and maintain VBA macros and compose programming scripts; and GREP commands, HTML, XML and JavaScript.
- Indepth understanding of Hansard
- Demonstrated project management and problemsolving skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and aptitude for working well on a team in a fastmoving environment.
