Posting Overview:


The Public Relations Officer reports to the Director of Education and is responsible for providing communications guidance, and researching, planning, developing and implementing a comprehensive communications plan for the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) that aligns with its Strategic Priorities.

In addition, the Public Relations Officer is responsible for system-wide activities that initiate, promote, enhance, and develop the engagement of LKDSB students, staff, parents/guardians and community members as well as with entrepreneurs, corporations, agencies, Public Health and levels of government that exist within the Sarnia Lambton and Chatham-Kent communities.

The Public Relations Officer is responsible for supervising the LKDSB Web Administrator and is a member of Executive Council.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations or related field, or equivalent education and experience.

Other Key Skills & Knowledge:

  • Highly motivated individual who can function independently;
  • Experience with the development and execution of effective and targeted communication plans and production of publications, as well as strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Proven ability to handle multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy;
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, sound judgement, and sensitivity in order to interact effectively with all levels of the organization, including Trustees, and the public;
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with levels of government;
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills;
  • Experience building and maintaining a strategic social media engagement plan and will be knowledgeable and creatively engaged with evolving social media, mobile and other digital platforms;
  • Excellent presentation skills in order to, on occasion, make presentations to Board staff and/or outside agencies, etc.;
  • Experience in the area of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and antioppression education as outlined in the Ontario Curriculum; knowledge and experience working with First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities is an asset;
  • Working knowledge of the Education Act, Regulations of Ontario, Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act; and Canadian Copyright Act;
  • Previous working experience within the education sector is an asset;
  • Experience in the area of conflict resolution and mediation is an asset;
  • Excellent computer skills to manage a variety of programs; and
  • All other duties as assigned by the Director of Education.

Position Requirements:

  • Travel throughout the district;
  • Attending evening meetings, including LKDSB Board Meetings (Private and Public Session); and
  • Responding to urgent communication needs outside of regular work hours, including weekends (ex. inclement weather).

Position Effective Date & Length:
Permanent, 12 month, salaried, Non-union position.

Home location to be determined (Sarnia Education Centre or Chatham Regional Education Centre).
