About the Role


Reporting to the HR Manager, Specialized Functions, we are looking for a passionate Training and Development Specialist to join our HR team.

In this role, you are responsible for driving the delivery of business-wide training and development initiatives to help our diverse and dynamic teams be successful in their roles.

You are joined by a team of specialists who manage SNDL's core HR functions, such as policy and process, HR analytics, total rewards, recruitment, etc.


This position requires a confident and creative professional who takes people and culture seriously and is passionate about championing individual and organizational growth.

You understand that helping others realize their full potential isn't accomplished with a 'one-size fits all' approach.

You seek input and consider the many role, organization, and human factors that influence a supportive and effective learning and development program.


Role and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Identify areas for improvement and opportunities for growth with employees throughout the organization and execute training and development strategies to address needs.
  • Build competency development profiles and establish KPIs for key roles.
  • Develop and maintain learning content on the LMS and internal Sharepoints.
  • Identify and establish engaging ways to close training gaps in key roles.
  • Welcome newly acquired employees and provide training support alongside the HRBP's.
  • Consult with leaders to assess staffing situations and ensure succession plans are in place, in partnership with the Talent Acquisition Team Leader.
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to develop handson skill assessment tests as a recruiting strategy.
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to build and maintain internal advancement opportunity paths for key roles to encourage talent to stay within our business.
  • Design course content, instructional materials, media, training tools and evaluation tools suitable for the audience and training objectives.
  • Research available training programs, tools, and techniques to address employee development needs.
  • Propose and capitalize on complimentary or paid external materials and training courses that could be relevant to skill or training gaps.
  • Manage a tracking database to ensure timely and accurate record keeping for all employee training attendance records.
  • Facilitate training and development courses virtually and inperson, and evaluate participants, encouraging engagement and participation throughout.
  • Engage and guide leaders on how to monitor development and progress with their teams including how to address skill gaps and manage followups.
  • Support HR leaders in the creation of suitable company goals and targets that align with key deliverables, performance, and development needs. Understand how these targets and goals tie into performance management and total rewards.
  • Collect, manage and analyze training and development data, key metrics and trends to be able to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of courses and programs and present findings to senior leadership.
  • Stay current on instructional design and measurement practices.
  • Manage logistics related to onsite, offsite and virtual training, including but not limited to securing meeting space, issuing and managing meeting invites, room setup and ordering course materials.
  • Ensuring efficiencies are realized by working with BT to harmonize business needs with the capabilities of the LMS, HRIS or other platforms.
  • Support the automation and digitization of HR data collection and tracking as needed for adherence to internal standards and external audit compliance.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge of HR by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional associations.
  • Conduct visits to business locations as requested, in order to learn the true nature of our business segments and development opportunities across our employee base.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Postsecondary degree or diploma in HR or Business Administration (or demonstration of equivalent experience and coursework) required.
  • Experience in retail and/or a manufacturing facility desired, particularly in the liquor and/or cannabis industry.
  • 46 years Training and Development experience required.
  • Working towards, or obtained, CPHR designation an asset.
  • Successful track record of developing top talent, preferably 5+ years' experience.
  • Experience in change management strongly preferred, as SNDL is continuing to grow
  • Experience and training in adult learning, education, development, facilitation, and evaluation.
  • Experience working with training and psychometric tools for assessment of competencies and work styles.
  • Familiarity and ability to work with individual learning styles.
  • Strong/advanced skills in Microsoft Office
